If you will be playing with linux hdd raids and performance have a look
also on:

# you can set read-ahead per blockdevice
blockdev --setra 4096 /dev/mapper/vg00-data
blockdev --setra 0 /dev/hda

# there are different types of schedulers that can be set
echo deadline > /sys/block/hda/queue/scheduler

# and be nice also to the io for long running processes
apt-get install schedutils
man ionice
