Well, depending on public interest, I'd be more than happy to give a talk on any of the following subjects. These are just topics I feel comfortable with talking about on short notice (e.g. the stuff I've done every day for the past couple of years, which means little preparation time on my part) but if anyone would like to see anything special, I'd be happy to do what I can. XML / XSLT * Intro / overview talk * Generating / manupulating XML * Transforming XML using XSLT with Perl and LibXSLT * Extending LibXSLT with custom XPath functions in Perl * AxKit XML Application Server RDF * Intro to RDF / Redland * Using RDF::Helper within a Perl program * RDF SPARQL queries and using RDF as an RDBMS replacement Apache / mod_perl * Intro / overview talks * Using SAWA for event-based MVC web application development * REST web services I don't know what the local Perl community is up for and interested in, so if anyone would like to see a talk on one of these topics, or a similar topic, let me know. So if you want to both give a general RDF / semweb talk to Vossoc, and give a Perl-module specific talk to Victoria.pm, such as RDF::Helper and/or AxKit, I'll certainly enjoy both of them. -- Darren Duncan From Peter at PSDT.com Wed May 10 09:53:35 2006 From: Peter at PSDT.com (Peter Scott) Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 09:53:35 -0700 Subject: [VPM] Perl Mongers Meeting May 16 Message-ID: <6.2.3.4.2.20060508121659.024fb370@mail.webquarry.com> Victoria.pm will meet at its regular date and time at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 16, at UVic in C113, David Strong Building (see http://www.uvic.ca/maps/index.html). Michael Nachbaur will talk about RDF::Helper. This is a companion talk to the one at VOSSOC the following week. RDF is the Resource Description Framework, a W3C specification and a key interchange format of the Semantic Web. We're on the bleeding edge here, folks :-) RDF::Helper is a common abstraction API for the various RDF libraries that are out there, similar to DBI/DBD. There is currently only one full RDF API for Perl (namely Redland, found at http://librdf.org/). The goal of RDF::Helper is to unify and simplify the gory details of dealing with an RDF datastore, providing syntactic sugar and convenience functionality for the average Perl user. So in other words, you want to keep all source lines that contain non-whitespace characters. This should be sufficient: for (@input_lines) { if ($_ =~ m/\S/) { push( @output_lines, $_); } } Or more tersely (and what I prefer to say myself): @output_lines = grep { $_ =~ m/\S/ } @input_lines; The grep form looks better for simpler cases if you're keeping the whole file in memory at once. Only use the for-loop then if you're keeping just one file line at a time in memory, and spitting the rest out to another file, to save on RAM. -- Darren Duncan P.S.
