Um, apples & oranges.  gdb can't debug Perl and perl -d can't debug C.

One could dream about perl -d invoking some kind of gdb to go into the 
actual opcodes... sort of the equivalent of stepi.  Anyone know if 
there's going to be a Parrot debugger?
