But true, I heard it was an absolute success, especially because it was held together with the 6th edition of the International Free Software Forum (FISL) which had 5000 attendees. Visiting Vancouver is definitely in my Todo list, as well as touring Canada in general. This was originally scheduled for the 25th, however this is going to be rescheduled to Wednesday, the 20th of July. Because.. When I was at yapc a few weeks ago, I asked Casey West if he would consider coming to Vancouver prior to OSCon, and this visit has now been confirmed for Thursday, July 28th. Overture, the sponsored search division of Yahoo!, has developed a number of systems that have successfully scaled over several orders of magnitude in both data volume and query rate, and Scaldeferri will discuss the ideas behind some of these. General topics covered will include: * Caching using local and distributed caches * When and how to distribute your application across multiple machines * Use of asynchronous communication techniques to increase throughput and ensure acceptable response times Scaldeferri also discusses the interplay between different levels of abstraction, from high-level business logic, to practical Perl programming, to low-level OS and hardware behavior, and how all of these affect the design and architecture of such systems. Bio: Kevin Scaldeferri is a lead developer at Yahoo!'s sponsored search division, Overture, where he has spent the last three years taming an ever-growing Perl code base that currently serves over one billion web requests a day. His professional interests include programming languages and software development practices. Outside work, he enjoys cooking, reading, modern art, and "challenging" music. A couple things. First, I need to know what to talk about. Class::DBI and the JavaScript Archive Network are a couple options. I can talk about my development tools. Informally, I can go on for hours. Food and drink helps too. :-) Which brings me to point number two. It would seem I'll have all of Saturday and a reasonable portion of Sunday in Vancouver. I suggest: * Joining 350,000 people to watch the fireworks in English Bay Saturday night. A good viewing spot is sunset beach at the corner of David and Denman St. downtown. Show starts at 10, but arrive at 8:30 to get a seat on the sand. * All you can eat Sushi at Tanpopo (also at the corner of Davie and Denman St.). They have wild salmon (as opposed to farmed). * Hike the Grouse Grind. It's a trail up one of the mountains on the North Shore. There's a convenient tram at the top that takes you down for $5 and gives you a spectacular view of the city and ocean. People will tell you it's hard. It's not. Just take your time (hour and a half will do). TTUL Ken Casey West [26/07/05 21:36 -0400]: > > Hi Vancouver. > > A couple things. First, I need to know what to talk about.
