A quick look at operator precedence can help<br><br><a href="http://www.perl.com/doc/manual/html/pod/perlop.html">http://www.perl.com/doc/manual/html/pod/perlop.html</a><br><br>the brackets help you override that precedence so they can change the logic.<br>
