Hi All,

Thanks to the half dozen folks who attended our free-form January meeting.
We ended up chatting about UTF-8, partly because it's one of those topics
that I need to learn more about. Thanks to newcomer Bob K from San Diego
who dropped in -- nice to have some out-of-town folks visiting.

Fulko also voiced his dissatisfaction with gitlab and git in general, so we
discussed that for a while as well. Git's a weird tool, but it does work
well.

Anyway, I got some good pointers on how to proceed on my UTF-8 challenge,
and I'm going to put myself on the line to deliver a talk about UTF-8 as
part of February's meeting (nothing like a deadline for motivation). If
someone else has a talk they'd like to give, terrific! I am not going to
have enough to fill out a 90 minute meeting.

Fulko, if you have some pearls of wisdom to deliver about git or gitlab,
we're all ears. :)

PS I have updated the meetup.com event to be an on-line event (complete
with link!) for the foreseeable future. Our next meeting will be Thursday,
February 25. We'll get together in person when it's safe to drink beer

Yes, I'd be interested in learning about gitlab.

To my surprise I've been using git for more than 10 years now.  I've 
heard of gitlab but don't know how it is similar to/different from github.

On a segue from having a "free-form" last meeting... and not ignoring the
gitlab reference, I'd love to hear about that, too. But, a bit off topic as
this may be, please bear with me:

I'm having some work challenges myself that I'd like to hear opinions form
you guys. Somehow, being a Perl programmer and somewhat knowledgeable of
Node.js, my manager thinks I am ideal for this new "Node.js integration
with Perl" project (they are calling this "The Convergence" project). Our
code is Perl 5. I just can't see the connection, especially when he didn't
answer any of my questions about building an API, REST, webservices...
Would anyone here think this is worthy of some free discussion and
exchange, in line with what happened last meeting, that was "free-form" ?

Sure, we can discuss this on Thursday as well. I have part of a
presentation on UTF-8 done, and when I run out of material, we can move on
to The Convergence. I have some thoughts, but I'll keep them to myself till

Hi All,

I'm glad we had a good turnout for this month's meeting; I presented part 1
of my UTF-8 presentation, and we had a really good discussion after that
about the problem that I'm trying to solve (that's related to UTF-8 -- for
those who weren't there). On that point, I have some homework to do before
the next meeting, so I can report back.

I do not have a presenter for March yet, but that's a couple of weeks away,
and I have two leads on a presentation.

I'm going to see if I can use my company Google Meet account for the next
meeting. It's industrial strength (we max out at 250 people) so should be
fine. It was frustrating to see during the January meeting that Jitsi would
allow me to record (when I didn't need to), and then look for the same
control during February's meeting (when I needed to) and finding ..
nothing. That was a drag.

Not that the presentation was fabulous, but I had intended to record.
