From jkeenan at pobox.com Wed Aug 5 09:35:44 2020 From: jkeenan at pobox.com (James E Keenan) Date: Wed, 5 Aug 2020 12:35:44 -0400 Subject: [tpm] Perl 7: Slides from last week's talk; opportunities Message-ID: <3d6f0cff-998d-e1c6-98fe-fd86df12edc1@pobox.com> Thanks to Alex for offering me the opportunity to speak virtually to Toronto Perlmongers last Thursday evening. Here is a link to the slides I presented. http://thenceforward.net/perl/talks/toronto-perlmongers-20200730/slides/ Two more points: 1. As you probably know, we discovered that the webcasting technology we were using limited attendance to 10 people. So people both in Toronto and elsewhere (to whom I had sent invitations) were shut out of the meeting. We can compensate for that by having a virtual meeting on IRC. If, *after going through those slides*, you want to have more discussion about Perl 7 as software and project, I'd be happy to set up a time to discuss this on the otherwise little used #tpm IRC channel at irc.perl.org. Please ping me off-list if you're interested in that. 2. We're fast approaching a stage in the Perl 7 Project where we need more people looking at the code base and the changes we've made. What we're looking for is not so much "code reviewing" as "code understanding," that is, understanding exactly what we're trying to do and then looking at the code to determine whether we've done what we set out to do. To be a "code understander" you would need: * Familiarity with Perl 5 -- which, I would suspect, the overwhelming majority of readers of this list already have; * Basic familiarity with git and an account on github.com; but ... * Familiarity with the Perl core distribution is helpful but not essential. If you have free time, particularly over the balance of this month and next, and would like to make a tangible contribution to the forward development of Perl, please ping me off-list and I'll go into greater detail. Thank you very much. The topic I had in mind was work code standards, which is probably a topic where there are at least n+1 opinions among n people. I'll start with some favourite sub-topics: 1. First, do no harm. 2. Document. 3. Consistency. 4. Tests (where possible). Finally, since streamyard has been a bit of an issue, I'm going to try hosting our meeting this month using jitsi.org .. I'll see about getting that set up via the TPF this week. At this point I don't know if it will be possible to record the meeting to Youtube, but I'll be in touch.
