Jim's in Toronto this week, so it is an opportunity for him to road-test his talk on Perl test testing which he's giving at the DC-Baltimore Perl Workshop later this year.

Olaf Alders: TPM Web Page Hackathon (II)
Part 2 of the hackathon to re-work the Toronto Perl Mongers web site.

Location: 2 Bloor Street West, (usually) in a room on the 12th floor. The room will be announced on the mailing list a few days before the meeting. It will also be left with the security desk in the building (main floor lobby) shortly before the meeting starts (i.e. around 6pm).

Time: 6:45 p.m.

Directions: This building is on the north-west corner of Bloor and Yonge, accessible by subway from Bloor station. Pay parking is also ample in this area.

Security note: The elevators in the building are "locked down" after 5:30pm to people without building access cards. Leading up to the meeting someone will come down to the main floor lobby every few minutes to ferry people upstairs.

After Jim's talk tomorrow we want to wrap up the work on the new, sexy Toronto.pm site.  If you have a portable hacking device, please bring it along.  If you don't, you can pair program with someone who has the hardware.  In preparation, please take a moment to install the app and the necessary deps. I've posted instructions here:

Let me know if you run into any problems deploying the app locally with these instructions.  Also, if you need to be added to our Github organization (i.e., if you can't clone the repo), let me know and I'll add you.  Even if you had the app running at the last meeting, please take a moment to try it out before we meet tomorrow so that we don't need to spend a lot of time installing dependencies, SSH keys etc.

I tried that. 'cpan' gives more verbose output and, when I studied it, I 
eventually remembered something from trying to install XML::LibXML on 
other machines.  It has a dependency on (at least) the libxml2 library. 
  On my Linux box (though unfortunately not on my Mac), I eventually 
managed to build and install that from source.  Once I did that, I was 
able to use 'cpan' to install first XML::LibXML, then the three XML-* 
distros listed above.  Finally, I was able to return to
'cpanm' and re-call 'cpanm --installdeps .' which completed the 
installation.

Almost every Linux distribution includes libxml2, so that should just be
a question of installing the right -dev or -devel package.

By 'cpan' do you mean, perl -MCPAN -e shell
or something else?

The CPAN module installs dependencies automatically, although it's
usually best to install the Perl modules your Linux distribution
provides first, in case there were patches.

Hi Jim,

Glad to hear you got it sorted.  :)  cpanm also does have a verbose switch:

cpanm -v --installdeps . 

That should give you a similar level of detail, I think.

Thanks to everyone who pitched in to improving the web site tonight.  It looks great and it's a huge improvement.  One thing that I noticed in the commit messages is a lot of this:

"Merge branch 'develop' of github.com:toronto-perl-mongers/tpm-website into develop"

I think that rebasing will avoid a lot of these merge commits.  So, instead of:

"git pull origin develop"

you can try:

"git pull --rebase origin develop"

As long as your changes have been committed before the pull, you should be fine and it makes for cleaner commit logs.  Not a big issue here, but a handy thing I picked up recently.

Ah!  The "common sense" explanation of a case in which to use 
'--rebate'.  I've gone years (well, 2 years) wondering about that.

the Toronto.pm site.

It was just an idea I had and just a prototype. I was hoping it would
spark further discussion and possibly we could get someone more
talented than I with their [FAVORITE_VECTOR_EDITOR_HERE] to make it
even better.

My vision is that the header would scroll right to left and wrap
around again as a repeating background with mouse interaction or not
if that is too flashy.

Please share your thoughts.
