Looked at Watir? for a day but didn't get too far into it. I'd be interested in reading other solutions, even if they are not perlish.? I know there are tools around that allow you to "record" a manual testing session, I just don't know which ones are lightweight and play nice with the packages mentioned above, and in your future replies. Eventually will want to write this kind of smoketest for native Windows apps; and to be able to empower others to make their own test cases, after they have the first 20 tests written for them. Q2:? Is there a way to avoid using the monolithic HP QTP, Mercury Suite, Robo*? tools,?? and manage all the testing lifecycles taxonomy and integration, in the early adopter stages?? In fact, it isn't exactly reliable even there, and I tend to use #!/usr/bin/env perl to find the one in the path, just to be on the safe side. And on Windows, the path is really what you need to use. I think you can map the file extension to the executable, that would be the Windowsy thing to do. But I always work to keep the dependency on the executable out of the scripts to reduce maintenance. Scripts will, therefore, fail if there isn't a Perl in the path, and throw errors in the event of a missing module or file, etc. Windows does also use some environment variables, such as PERL5LIB, which is used to initialize @INC, in addition to the contents of the command line. So on Windows, it usually comes down to environment variable hacking of some sort. Usually I did this by autogenerating batch scripts which contain the right values (I have other values to set), but most people use pl2bat for this. In fact, pl2bat might be what you are looking for. It's probably there already installed. This is done by wrapping the perl script with some line of batch code. An example for a single line ?Hello world? script is later in the email. The batch file initially runs as a batch file, then calls the Perl interpreter using the same batch file as the input perl script. The command to do that is: ?perl ?x ?S %0?. This looks for the Perl interpreter using the PATH environment variable. You could change the wrapper batch file to look for Perl in multiple places. Windows does not use the #! line to locate perl, except in the special case of running the script under Apache as a CGI script. Instead of pulling in the modules with ?use? statements, you can wrap the use statements with an eval expression. In this talk he will walk through the changes needed to port several of those modules, a journey that gives a surprisingly thorough overview of how the two languages differ, as well as insights into the relative strengths of each.
