After a couple of entertaining and informative talks from Damian I would happily skip straight to September's lightning talks. In-Reply-To: <01273706-9715-4A16-970E-C607EB2D0408@stok.ca> Message-ID: <1312569374.91692.YahooMailClassic@web125720.mail.ne1.yahoo.com> Greetings Mongeren, BACKGROUND: 1. OS WindozeServer2003/5/8? with ActiveState.perl5.8.7(busted version) ? is current release and also? OS linux2.6 kernel with perl5.8.3? (older version I know) GOALS: 2. I wish to be able to upgrade the perl release up to a more current revision on both OS's, but will need to regression test all the scripts with the newer perl release IN Place. ISSUES: 3. Windows multiple perl trees.? AFAIK,? I can install a separate perl version (ActiveState OR?? Strawberry)? on the Windows side, in a non-standard directory and munge the DOS ENV and PATH? to switch back and forth between the two releases to test.? Or going out of my way to switch the underlying directory of? a link to D:\apps\perl\? directory using "JUNCTION.EXE"? or a loopback mount/share. 4.? linux multiple perl trees.? this should be as straightforward as the Windows side I'm guessing,? only the ENV setup script is slightly different, due to OS differences. 5. Enumerating existing bundle of modules.? AFAIK? you can reliably query the installed modules using: ??? use ExtUtils::Installed; ??? my $instmod = ExtUtils::Installed->new(); ??? foreach my $module ($instmod->modules()) { ??????? my $version = $instmod->version($module) || "???"; ??????? print "$module -- $version\n"; ??? } But this would likely NOT find? any "local::lib"? or? homegrown modules that got copied into a non- at INC path.? e.g.??? /path/to/custom/apps/PROD/perl/SOX/bigBrotherSOXvalidater.pl? might have a customSOX.pm? module disted with the former, in the same directory, or a lower? subdirectory like:?? /path/to/custom/apps/PROD/perl/SOX/lib/customSOX.pm 5.1? using find and grep instead to find the outlier modules? Surely someone has learned the hard way to dig and delve for custom .pm? files or OS-specific, or vendor-specific? DLL's,? object files, libraries, bins, etc.? that would cause regression tests to fail due to a higher/lower version of the module.? Ugh. Instantiating a handful of VM's? is not an option at this point. Ugh. All comments are welcomed to help me fail fast. /jordan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Note that I don't know perlbrew myself, so if anyone out there knows it and wants to give a talk on it, it could be a useful thing to have. Which is not to say it needs to be a topic for August -- like Mike said, we may be All Perled Out for the time being. But it might make a good meeting topic for October. Now, Alan said this would be a handy thing for him to know given his current problem, but now that I've given him "perlbrew" as a search phrase he could be good to go. In fact, if you want to give a talk in October about how you used perlbrew to solve your problem, that might work out well... The package comes with an ar archive for Linux 64 but I need to compile it and run it on FreeBSD. FreeBSD make process makes no complaints about the object files in the ar in the make process, and everything makes without an error. The lib compiles fine, but when the dynaloader is loading I get: /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: (undisclosed).so: Undefined symbol "__errno_location" Is this ld-elf complaining that it does not find the symbol in (undisclosed), or is it (undisclosed) not finding the symbol in it's dependencies? I've been trying to learn more about __errno_location but some say it's relates to the pthreads lib, some that it's libm and should be defined in errno.h, but nope, it's not defined in any .h in Linux or FreeBSD! As you can see, the lib build fine and satisfies all dependencies. Shouldn't the undefined symbol pop-up during linking of the shared object (during creation) instead than on dynamic linking? ldd blib/arch/auto/.so blib/arch/auto/Gateway/Gateway.so: libcurl.so.6 => /usr/local/lib/libcurl.so.6 (0x800c00000) libssl.so.6 => /usr/lib/libssl.so.6 (0x800d54000) libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 (0x800ea7000) libm.so.5 => /lib/libm.so.5 (0x8010b7000) libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x8011d7000) libc.so.7 => /lib/libc.so.7 (0x800647000) libcrypto.so.6 => /lib/libcrypto.so.6 (0x8012e5000) libz.so.5 => /lib/libz.so.5 (0x801585000) [download] Thanks in advance for any comments. They hear that they only get five minutes to speak, and they get all tense. ``How can I squeeze a whole talk into five minutes?'' > > No! The point is that because the talk is only five minutes long, you don't have to take it so seriously. Just try to say something brief and interesting, and then get out in a hurry. Of course we can follow up after the talks are over, or in the bar afterwards. It would be fun to see if we can get 11 talks cranked out in an hour. You don't have to have slides or any other fancy stuff, just a willingness to spend 300 seconds saying something!
