If with Linux, the laptop function key (e.g. fn-f2 or fn-f5 is common)
should work, but if not, I have a desktop gnome launcher that runs,
 xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1024x768
and that will work except for very old projectors that need 800x600.

It's always worth testing beforehand, though.
