D-- one of the more fun management-type individuals and head of a different department-- is telling me and R-- one of the network analysts-- about the whole thing. R says, "C'mon, what would we do? We don't have any women, we're not good at that kind of stuff." D and I stare at him for a second, and she points at me. He blinks and goes, "Oh, I forgot about her." I knew I was one of the guys, but... !!! I made the guys all chip in five bucks and an old grey t-shirt and told 'em I'd take care of the rest. Now we've got translucent green vellum taped to the fluorescent light panels to give everything a greenish cast, black plastic covering one wall, black and green crepe paper streaming down over it in a design vaguely reminiscent of dripping code, and strips of posterboard with drawings of red and blue pills at the corners and which read "Mr. Anderson" stuck over all the nameplates (corporate clones, that's us... mine is "Ms. Anderson" though), and a border of green weird symbols around the whiteboard. I'm cutting the hems off the shirts, including the ones at neck and arms, and making them all wrinkly, and we'll wear them with drab colored pants and have stuck on our skin little posterboard circles colored to look like sockets... Muahaha. Management should know better than to let Networking have a chance at something like this. I wonder how many blank looks we're going to get. And I thought I was in the spirit of the season when I changed my screen saver.... Hey, I found some somewhat Halloweeny Perl poetry: ---------------- "Surgical Blues" by yosefm (PerlMonks) open BODY; chop; chop; chop; split; push @body, 'hands in gloves'; pack 'a', 'prosthetic' and unpack 'a', 'bone'; splice @skeleton; join @blood_vessels; close or die; ---------------- "Black Perl" from Programming Perl, 3rd Edition BEFOREHAND: close door, each window & exit; wait until time. open spellbook, study, read (scan, select, tell us); write it, print the hex while each watches, reverse its length, write again; kill spiders, pop them, chop, split, kill them. unlink arms, shift, wait & listen (listening, wait), sort the flock (then, warn the "goats" & kill the "sheep"); kill them, dump qualms, shift moralities, values aside, each one; die sheep! die to reverse the system you accept (reject, respect); next step, kill the next sacrifice, each sacrifice, wait, redo ritual until "all the spirits are pleased"; do it ("as they say"). do it(*everyone***must***participate***in***forbidden**s*e*x*). return last victim; package body; exit crypt (time, times & "half a time") & close it, select (quickly) & warn your next victim; AFTERWORDS: tell nobody. wait, wait until time; wait until next year, next decade; sleep, sleep, die yourself, die at last ---------------- jpt > -----Original Message----- > From: Rebekah Landbeck [mailto:rlandbeck@uniteddatatronics.com] > Sent: Monday, October 27, 2003 11:59 AM > To: tallahassee-pm@mail.pm.org > Subject: [Tallahassee-pm] Halloweek-- a bit of fun > > > > So management has this bright idea of encouraging each > department to come > up with a decoration theme for the week of Halloween, and to come in > costume on the day itself. HR wanted the same thing from us, so IT is now overrun with hundreds of very tiny, very active 8 legged 'Web Servers' that have taken over the server room/IT area. Webbing from the walls and ceilings. Here at work we run the Cisco 7960 IP Phones, http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/tlhw/prodlit/7960_ds.htm in a Call Manager environment. For those that have never heard of this, the phones have a built in web server for management, as well as a being a full featured XML browser. So this evening I plan to produce a new Halloween themed image in the image format the phone uses, then push it out to all the phones early Friday morning. Speaking of IP telephony, I got an email from a friend of mine that does a lot of AVVID work, and he found http://fwd.pulver.com which is the Free World Dialer. I'm sure there are better sip servers out there, but this one included a bit of custom notes for converting a 7960 to a sip phone, so now I have one on my desk that has been converted. My FWD number is 75420 if you want to connect any of the various SIP capable devices or programs up to FWD and give me a call. Ok enough IP telephony weirdness, though I promise to post to Perl and or PHP programs that I use to do all of the phone goodness latter.
