Learning well and at a deep level takes a lot more than reading text on a page. Actively combining words and pictures helps in both understanding a subject and remembering it. "Head First Java" puts these ideas into practice with mind-stretching exercises, memorable analogies, and stories, humor, and attitude that aren't pasted-on distractions--they drive home key points and make ideas come alive. The Head First approach is as effective as it is unique. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/hfjava/ Excerpts on "A Trip to Objectville" and "Serious Polymorphism" are available online: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/hfjava/chapter/index.html ***iPhoto 2: The Missing Manual Order Number: 5067 Presented by best-selling author David Pogue, this updated edition keeps pace with Apple's recently revised digital shoebox for uploading, organizing, printing, publishing, and touching up digital photos. "iPhoto 2: The Missing Manual" charts the latest changes and illustrates the interactivity among Apple's iLife software products. With this guide, Macintosh fans can take their digital photos to the screen, the Web, printouts, hardbound photo books, and even to DVDs, CDs, and digital movies. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/iphoto2/ Chapter 10, "Publishing a Photo," is available online: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/iphoto2/chapter/index.html ***Programming C#, 3rd Edition Order Number: 4893 "Programming C#, 3rd Edition" focuses on the features and programming patterns that are new to the C# language and fundamental to programming web services and web applications on the .NET platform. It provides developers who may be experienced in other application toolkits with the grounding they'll need to start developing Cocoa applications. A complement to Apple's documentation, it is the only reference to the classes, functions, types, constants, protocols, and methods that make up Cocoa's Foundation and Application Kit frameworks, based on the Jaguar release (Mac OS X 10.2). http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/cocoaian/ Chapter 4, "Drawing and Imaging," is available online: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/cocoaian/chapter/index.html ***Java Database Best Practices Order Number: 5229 "Java Database Best Practices" takes you through a variety of ways to store and access data, enabling you to learn which "persistence model" is most appropriate for each type of application. This unique and comprehensive guide introduces each of the dominant APIs (Enterprise JavaBeans, Java Data Objects, and JDBC), along with lesser-known options. The book also explores the methodology and design components that use those APIs, and offers practices most appropriate for different types and makes of databases and applications. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/javadtabp/ Chapter 2, "Relational Data Architecture," is available online: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/javadtabp/chapter/index.html =============================================== Upcoming Events =============================================== ***For more events, please see: http://events.oreilly.com/ ***Perl Whirl Geek Cruise, Hawaii--Jun 1-8, 2003 Take a Perl Whirl Geek Cruise with authors Tim Bunce ("Programming the Perl DBI"), Randal Schwartz ("Learning Perl"), Nathan Torkington ("Perl Cookbook"), and Larry Wall ("Programming Perl, 3rd Ed."). We have just implemented an ongoing project to import data from an outside agency into our database using Perl with DBI as a main component. Holguin) Date: Mon Aug 2 21:37:59 2004 Subject: [Tallahassee-pm] [Fwd: Newsletter from O'Reilly UG Program, May 29] References: <1054509074.3252.1.camel@jacob.home> Message-ID: <006a01c32923$3a638260$6712afc6@hector> The 2nd Thursday of June is Ok with me. I'll make sure not to miss this one since I was unable to attend the last one. For all of you who joined the group since our first meeting, my name is Hector Holguin. I met James and Todd in our first meeting. Since then, I have been extremely busy at work and unable to contribute much to the group. I work at The Printing House, Ltd. developing applications for their printing operations, as well as their real estate publications (Homes & Land magazine). In one area I deal a lot with paper inventory, job estimating, document proofing, etc. using ColdFusion/Oracle for intranet processes and, most recently, c++ on Macs for extending QuarkXPress and Abobe InDesign. The other area involves mostly collecting and processing information (real estate data and images) online for our print publications and web sites. Here is were I get to play with Perl in various ways, using primarily the DBI and ImageMagick modules. James: I still have the two books I took home in the first meeting. I apologize for keeping them so long and will make sure to bring them to the next meeting. Marie: I saw your messages regarding the YAPC and tried to work out the time with my family and my employer, but didn't get it. Enjoy and let us know how it went. Regards, Hector Holguin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Tillman" To: Sent: Sunday, June 01, 2003 7:11 PM Subject: [Tallahassee-pm] [Fwd: Newsletter from O'Reilly UG Program, May 29] > Latest newsletter from Oreilly attached. > > Guess what. I also had a great time, and enjoyed the conversations. Since I also promised something -- here's the link to the DBSchema project: http://dbschema.sf.net/ You'll probably learn more about the project at this point by browsing the CVS repository, especially the DBSchema subdirectory: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/dbschema/ I noticed some files are missing from the repository that might help with understanding things a little (test files and examples). I'll see if I can track those down. However, the SQLServer.pm file has a good example of how the drivers were meant to work. You'll see the methods they are meant to implement and the objects they are supposed to create if you check the source code. Later on, I'll send a list of tasks for us to take on. jpt -----Original Message----- From: Phillip Tyre [mailto:phillip.tyre@fcul.com] Sent: Friday, June 13, 2003 11:07 AM To: tallahassee-pm@mail.pm.org Subject: [Tallahassee-pm] Things I did a bad job of explaining in the meeting last night: Wanted to say that I had a great time last night, and it was good to finally link some names to faces. There are actually several of us on this mailing list, with varying levels of experience and interest in Perl. I'm the group leader (a dubious honor, at best). Hopefully, some of the others will speak up. We have face-to-face meetings semi-regularly, at least once a month. If you're interested, you're welcome to come. The meeting announcements are always posted to the mailing list. Please feel free to check out our Wiki site, as well, which you can reach through our main web page: http://tallahassee.pm.org/ The Wiki has a section that lists the books that have been donated to the group's library. These can be "checked out" by sending a request for a book to the mailing list and picking it up at the next meeting. There's lots of differences between Perl and PHP, sure, but a lot of similarities, too. Although, I must admit that I learned Perl first, I believe it would be very logical to progress from PHP to Perl in the learning process. If you run into snags, feel free to ask questions -- or air your frustrations. jpt > -----Original Message----- > From: Rebekah Landbeck [mailto:rlandbeck@uniteddatatronics.com] > Sent: Monday, June 30, 2003 7:52 AM > To: tallahassee-pm@mail.pm.org > Subject: [Tallahassee-pm] By way of introduction... > > > I'm new to perl. I'm in management, now, though I'm working on a Perl program in my spare time. What I've found is that it's very easy to pick up just enough to be dangerous; however, it is a lot easier with a group of O'Reilly books around. I don't have a lot of experience with Perl, and none when it comes to the web stuff that you'll be working with. Good luck and welcome to the group. In time you will find that Perl is quite handy for a number of things, including web development. It should help a lot to have a background in PHP, rather than in ASP or ColdFusion. We, at the group, are always glad to answer any questions and help in times of frustration. Please, feel free to share with us as you learn.
