I used to run Thousand Oaks Perl Mongers, and have given a few talks at various PM chapters. I've recently moved to Redmond to work for MediaAlpha, and I decided to join the local PM chapter. I was sad when I learned of the passing of Andrew Sweger, the previous tsar. It didn't look like anyone was volunteering to get SPUG back up and running, so I volunteered to do it. MediaAlpha has offered its facilities to host in-person meetings, if and when those become feasible again. Until then, we can hold virtual meetings, I imagine. Does anyone have an opinion about the favored technology for doing that? I'm hoping to get the inestimable Randal Schwartz to give a talk at SPUG. He's living in the greater Seattle area lately, and I expect he has plenty to teach us. But maybe you do as well, dear reader! Would you like to give a talk? Let me know about it, or tell the list if you like. I look forward to hearing more from the members! Best, CCH From cjac at colliertech.org Wed Nov 4 21:42:26 2020 From: cjac at colliertech.org (C.J. I exchanged emails with him after I apparently took a job he vacated a couple of years ago. I'd love to attend a SPUG meeting, though I haven't written and Perl professionally in over a year. I'll pester merlyn and see if I can convince him to do another of his talks. It's been too long since I've seen him at all. Miss you all! C.J. I assumed everyone knew. There's a nice obituary at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/bellevue-wa/andrew-sweger-8756577 for those who want more context. I've already asked Randal to give a talk. He's curious what people might want to hear about. Any suggestions? On Wed, Nov 4, 2020, 9:42 PM C.J. I've got a job in that area and I haven't seen a lot of perl in the cases I've taken over the last 18 months. I think there is a lot to say about perl in a world where compute resources are so readily available, how storage can be replicated across the whole world with the call of a library function. I know a bit about issuing http requests with perl. And that's all that these API calls are, http endpoints. What libraries have been built to issue these commands, and if they haven't, what do we do to get on that train?
