As much as I wanted to do this in one pass, I realized that while it could be
done, it wasn't very readable at all.  So, I've decided to make some changes
to the module I'm writing -- in this case, things that are blocks of lines of
text (like in my original example) will need to be handled in two passes.

It won't fit my original design, but will be worth it in the long run due to
much easier maintainability I think.
