SPUG: Passing of William "Vi-Bill" Julien

Fellow SPUGsters,

I've just heard that William Julien died last week at home. He was
reportedly in very poor health for some time.

I knew Bill from his participation in several of my Perl programming
classes, and I liked him for his enthusiasm for programming, his can-do
attitude, and most memorably, for his unfathomable yet frequently
expressed love for (IMHO) the most pessimally ergonomic of all extant
text editors, Vi. To honor him for his unapologetic appreciation, I
always referred to him as "Vi-Bill" -- which he clearly enjoyed!

Vi Bill was a long-time member of SPUG and various local UNIX and Linux
groups, and an enthusiastic promoter of open source tools at Boeing.
IIRC, he won an award there in appreciation for the great performance
of a complex Perl-based system he created.

Vi Bill, if you're listening as I type this message using your
cherished Vi editor, I want you to know that I miss you! And I'm sure
Vi misses you too! (It surely has few remaining fans as ardent as you.)

I haven't yet heard of any plans for a memorial ceremony of any kind,
but I'll post anything I hear to the list.

:wq!,
-Tim
