Gryphon Shafer Meeting Date: Tuesday, 21 August 2007 Meeting Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Location: Whitepages.com offices, downtown Seattle Cost: Admission is free and open to the public Info: http://seattleperl.org/ ==================================================== This coming Tuesday, August 21st, is the next meeting of the THE SEATTLE PERL USERS GROUP. This month, Gryphon Shafer will present a talk entitled "OCD HACKS FOR SUCCESSFUL REMOTE TEAMS". Learn how to use obsessive compulsiveness to lead or participate in a successful remote team. Hacks include managing distance and culture issues, useful technical tools, hiring standards and practices, style guides and code reviews, and more. Learn how to build a successful remote team and pitch telecommuting to entrenched leadership. (I'm all for that LAST point!) It promises to be an interesting, informational and possibly controversial discussion (depending upon your point of view, I guess!). Gryphon Shafer is the Director of Technology for Petfinder, part of Animal Planet, Discovery Communications. He leads his department as a fully-telecommute organization spread across the country and works out of his home in Port Orchard. So, be sure to bring your friends, stray pets (ahem), and, of course, don't forget to bring yourself! We'll see YOU at the next SPUG meeting! ================ Thanks again to all the SPUG members that show up at meetings or participate on the list to make the group worthwhile in the first place, and all the JAPHs out there for just being. Meeting Location ================ Whitepages.com is located on the 16th floor of the Rainier Square Tower (1301 5th Avenue, Seattle) which is across from the 5th Avenue Theater. See the directions[1] for a quick primer on how to reach us from various locations across Puget Sound. There are plenty of locations to park in the area, including on the street. If you're looking for off-street parking, you can park in the Rainier Square garage which has an entrance on Union St. After 6PM, the building management restricts access to most floors. Our host is trying to take care of this, but if unsuccessful, they will station someone on the 1st floor near the elevator bank and 5th Avenue entrance to let people in. Worst case scenario, give the host a call on his cell phone[2] or [3] and he'll run down to let you in. Our hosts are providing a generous assortment of free sodas, fruit drinks, teas, and coffee, and also have some snacks. You definitely won't dehydrate here. He was reportedly in very poor health for some time. I knew Bill from his participation in several of my Perl programming classes, and I liked him for his enthusiasm for programming, his can-do attitude, and most memorably, for his unfathomable yet frequently expressed love for (IMHO) the most pessimally ergonomic of all extant text editors, Vi. To honor him for his unapologetic appreciation, I always referred to him as "Vi-Bill" -- which he clearly enjoyed! Vi Bill was a long-time member of SPUG and various local UNIX and Linux groups, and an enthusiastic promoter of open source tools at Boeing. IIRC, he won an award there in appreciation for the great performance of a complex Perl-based system he created. Vi Bill, if you're listening as I type this message using your cherished Vi editor, I want you to know that I miss you! And I'm sure Vi misses you too! (It surely has few remaining fans as ardent as you.) I haven't yet heard of any plans for a memorial ceremony of any kind, but I'll post anything I hear to the list. :wq!, -Tim *--------------------------------------------------------------------* | Tim Maher, PhD (206) 781-UNIX http://www.consultix-inc.com | | tim at ( Consultix-Inc, TeachMeLinux, or TeachMeUnix ) dot Com | | CLASSES: Contact us about our newly expanded tutoring program! | *-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+--* | >> My "Minimal Perl for UNIX People" is an Amazon Best Seller! << | | # Download chapters, read reviews, and order at MinimalPerl.com # | *--------------------------------------------------------------------* From methylgrace at yahoo.com Fri Aug 17 12:40:48 2007 From: methylgrace at yahoo.com (grace hensley) Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2007 12:40:48 -0700 (PDT) Subject: SPUG: Vi-Bill In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <702212.60465.qm@web36514.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Tim, and friends, What a sweet email. Washington Trails Association (WTA) is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and maintaining hiking trails. Its dynamic website, , is the local hiker's go-to resource for trail conditions, volunteer opportunities, and advocacy for trails. WTA is in the midst of a website redesign / overhaul to a Plone platform site with the technology consulting firm ONE/Northwest . Our current Perl-based website (www.wta.org) is "homebrewed" and our volunteer webmaster / Perl programmer who developed the current site has recently retired from this position. The website overhaul is taking place in phases, and the first phase involves a redesign of the site, updated and simpler navigation, and conversion of many parts of the site to the Plone platform. Some Perl database-driven components of the existing WTA site will be "knitted together" with the new site for Phase 1. Phases 2 and 3 (to happen throughout early 2008) will address these areas and re-create them in Plone. Knitting together the old site and the new site for the launch of Phase 1 necessitates contracting with an experienced Perl Programmer that can execute specific tasks, like replacing the old navigation bar and footer with the new ones on specified pages, replacing some links in the static text on these pages, ripping out the old sidebar, and updating the old style sheet to better conform with our new visual design. We also would like to have this person take some system administration responsibility for our webserver (Apache/Perl/MySQL) during this transition. The original developer of our website application will be available for consultation as needed to help you ramp up. Qualifications: * Experience designing and building database-powered website applications with Apache, Perl and MySQL, with an emphasis on content management and user-contributed content. * Passion for Washington Trails Association's mission Please send inquires and resumes to: Amanda Madorno Interim Executive Director Washington Trails Association 2019 Third Ave, #100 Seattle, WA 98121 Amanda at wta.org (email preferred) (206) 625-1367 Washington Trails Association is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, religion, sex, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or national origin. I'm working on making arrangements to bring an EVDO modem/router so we can have some connectivity for at least the presentation machine, and possibly everyone. We'll just have to see how it goes. *********************************************************** Speakers: Please be able to give your full presentation without Internet access! *********************************************************** There was also some minor confusion regarding the meeting schedule, here's what we have planned, roughly: 12:00 - 12:30: "Mingle" time, allow for everyone to arrive, chat, and get seated. 12:30 - 1:55: Presentations in "Lightning talk" format 1:55 - 2:00: Raffle, give-aways 2:00 - 4:00: Workshop time, get help with specific issues, work on projects, install Linux, networking with fellow GSLUG'ers. 4:00: Meeting ends ============================================= Original notice: The September 2007, inaugural meeting of the Greater Seattle Linux Users Group (GSLUG) will be held on Saturday, September 1st, starting promptly at 12:00 PM on the North Seattle Community College campus. ****************************************************** We are confirmed to use room IB 3319. The presentation format will be that of Lightning talks (Several talks from 5-10 minutes in length, with open Q&A afterwards) instead of the traditional hour or so long presentations. Following is a quick synopsis of the lightning presentations planned for September 1st: * Eric Butler: What's new in Linux? It's been a while since GSLUG last met, so I'm going to kick things off by going over some of the things that have changed in the linux/free software world these past few years, including new technologies that make both the linux desktop and the linux server more exciting than ever. * Steven Reisler: On the recent summary judgment in SCO v Novell and its implications Steve gave a talk on the SCO legal scrimmage at the 2004 LinuxFest. He gave a follow-up talk at the July, 2005 gslug meeting. He will give this follow-up talk on the latest. He will give another follow-up talk next year ... * Elaine: Can a law practice live by Debian alone? or reality Gnu/Linux I am Steve's IT - he's the attorney. * Mark Foster: DNS audits using Perl Scavenge is a perl-based mechanism to discover inactive DNS records. It is useful to the DNS admin looking to clean up zonefile data. The script relies heavily on Net::DNS. I will show some examples of usage and ask for feedback on improving it. * Eitan Isaacson: Accessibility is good A brief introduction to accessibility. We of course hope to see many old faces and many new at this meeting, please plan on attending and be prepared to learn, share knowledge, and ask challenging questions!
