I'm not cheap -- I just like to stay at 4-5 star hotels for 
around $50, which has been easy to accomplish all around the
country since 9/11.

The trick is to suss out which one Priceline is offering you
before paying for it, which can be accomplished with a little
triangulation regarding published amenities and checking with
sites like biddingfortravel.com.  They're currently showing the
4-star "Hotel Lucia" and Hotel Vintage Plaza at $55, for recent stays.
