SPUG: installing perl mysql DBD - need C compiler?

You probably are better off installing a binary distribution rather than
a source distro for mysql.  Unless you have some non-standard needs, the
binaries should be just fine.  In fact, they're preferable, as you know
that they're built and tested, as opposed to building them in a
different environment.
