Thanks for all the responses, folks.  Since it does
sound like there's interest, I'll dust off the code and
start getting ready for collaboration.  I have some
screenshots I can put up on my website along with the
code to download.  I'll let you know when it's up
(tonight or tomorrow night) ...

Disclaimer: I started this very early in my perl life,
so I know that people will probably laugh at some of my
code, and/or have better ways to do things.  I'm really
looking forward to people taking a look and helping to
refine/correct the code!
