SPUG: The Best Editor...

Vanilla GNU emacs is also very good.  All the same features listed
below for Xemacs. 

BTW, if you've used the PINE email client, you can use (X)emacs.  The
main commands are virtually identical.  And there's mouse driven menus
for beginners.
