I'm in San Francisco for the first time in a couple of years.
I saw Chip at YAPC, and he suggested we could get together.

I'm attending the Red Hat Summit (on behalf of FLOSS Weekly as an
invited member of the press), and it seems like they have social things
every night that I wouldn't want to miss, but I arrive around 5pm Monday
to SFO, and am staying downtown at the Parc 55, so if we could pick a
place near there, that'd be good.

So if anyone is still on this list?  And if so, up for a Monday
Emergency?

Okay, a Monday Emergency it is.  I had some reservations about the
idea of meeting in some Union Square bar, but it dawned on me that the
Tempest is this place:

To find the Tempest you walk down 5th Street (aka Cyril Magnin) into
SoMa, and after you cross Mission Street short blocks later you turn
right on Natoma. One block later you should find the Tempest, 431
Natoma St (at Mary Street).

This was an old bike messenger bar, back in the days when there were
bike messengers.  I haven't been there in ages, but it sounds like a
good pick.

Any preference on times?  Shall we say 7pm?

Craigslist is up for hosting a perl meeting on Tuesday, July 26th. I
was wondering if there might be some interest in doing a round of
lightning talks.  Myself, I've got one or two little things I could
talk about.  If I can get a some more people to commit in the next few
days, I'll tell the folks at craigslist we're on.

As always, my take is that "perl talks" are talks about things of
interest to Perl people.  Perl people are actually interested in lots
of things: different programming languages, operating systems,
databases, web servers, development tools, etc.  Old classics like "my
new favorite cpan module" are welcome as well, of course...

I don't know that there's a trick to using UberX there... I haven't
used it myself, but it's legal at SFO.  Once you're at the curb (or
realistically, a little before) you summon a ride, as usual.

Myself, I'd probably just use BART.  It goes straight from the airport
to your hotel (Powell St stop) in about a half-hour, for around $9.
There the trick is just that you need to take the AirTrain to the BART
station over in the International Terminal.

There's a video up for Fred Moyer's last talk "Learning Go for Perl
Programmers", over at the internet archive:

Let me know what you folks think of it...  it still seems a little big
to me at 400Mb for an hour long talk, I might try to squeeze it down a
little further (the video bitrate is down at 2000 now, but maybe I
could reduce that another 25%, and the frame rate is up at 29.97 fps
when 24 fps would probably be fine, but blender makes it awkward to
change the frame rate after-the-fact...).

Ah, I think I see what's going on there.  I can download the mp4 and
watch it with vlc, but you can't play it inside of firefox, because I
used the H.264 video encoding on the advice of someone at
stackoverflow, who neglected to mention it's patent-encumbered.

I'll switch back to the MPEG codec, and try again.

Meanwhile, the ogv file is definitely workable.

I quite liked watching it, and learned some new things.  It's quite
timely, as Go is in my very near future :)

If this were somehow up in the TB range, it might still be worth
discussing how to make it smaller, but as it is, it's pretty tiny.

Just my $.02, that being approximately how much the storage for the
current size costs if it's an ordinary SSD, much less if it's rotating
media.
