But who might they have annoyed? They're such wonderful people...), so I thought I'd remind that the SF Perl meeting is indeed tonight at 7pm (not on a Tuesday for once). The location is Geekdom SF, located downstairs at Rackspace 620 Folsom St, between 2nd Street and Hawthorne Street. http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/113347425 (They should put some racks out for the Folsom Street Fair.) VM informs me: "Food will be two trays from La Mediterranee. There will also be beer and cider." I'll be giving a talk tonight on "Unicode & Everything". -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... (Me - I'm happily ensconced in London!) Here's the deal: I'm teaching Perl (online) and one of my students lives a long way from any Perl shop. He'll happily relocate to the West coast of the US to get a Perl job. As to me - I'm happy to provide an honest appraisal of his skill set if an employer is thinking of taking him on. So my questions are: * Where on the West coast is it easiest to find a Perl job? * Which companies are open to taking on beginner-intermediate developers? * Are there any recruitment agents who specialise in Perl and would go the extra mile to find a placement for a newbie? If you're a company or recruitment agent who's interested, you're welcome to email me off list. The same container that a developer builds and tests on a laptop can run at scale, in production, on VMs, bare metal, OpenStack clusters, public clouds and more. This talk will take you on a journey from an old, badly understood, insecure and hard to maintain infrastructure to a new, shiny well known, well tested, automated and secure replacement - a transition made using lxc containers and docker.io Starting with a gentle introduction to docker and lxc, it'll move on to discussing how to use them to take control of and audit an organically grown environment. Topics covered will include: how to design a container based architecture, how (or if) to run configuration management software inside containers, how to arrange immutable containers for services with persistent mutable data (e.g. postfix, mysql) and how to effectively share puppet code between old (metal) and new (containerized) environments. Tomas (@bobtfish) works on infrastructure automation at large scale for Yelp. He?s speaks regularly at devops events and other technical conferences on a number of topics between testing, development, architecture, automation and systems administration. Tom came to the dark side of systems & devops after being a professional Perl developer for many years. He?s an avid open source contributor and lives in London with his fianc? and far too many cats. Doors will open for attendees at 6:45. * Security guards have been hired to work the door and handle the guest list. * We all need to be gone by 9:30. So not only is there food, there's BOOZE. I gather that we had some technical difficulties with recording the talk last time, so this is pretty much it for now. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
