If you can make it down to Sunnyvale tomorrow evening, you should check this out! http://www.meetup.com/SVPerl/events/154366022/ From peter09 at thoeny.org Tue Apr 8 12:52:34 2014 From: peter09 at thoeny.org (Peter Thoeny) Date: Tue, 8 Apr 2014 12:52:34 -0700 Subject: [sf-perl] Amazon considers removing Perl from Amazon Linux Image in EC2 Message-ID: <544E6A04-7665-499C-A394-BEF9A4B9D16E@thoeny.org> I just discovered this regarding Perl and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2): https://aws.amazon.com/amazon-linux-ami/2014.03-release-notes/ , "Looking ahead to our 2014.09 release" : "We are considering removing Perl from the packages that are installed by default on the AMI, but it will remain in the repositories." I would hat of Amazon drops Perl. TWiki is also deployed in the Amazon cloud by many companies. I wrote a blog post about this, http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Blog/BlogEntry201105x2 "Please let us know if you have feedback or concerns about any of these plans." I recommend complaining about considering removing Perl. Sort of odd, considering just above: "Perl has been updated from 5.10 to 5.16, bringing in many fixes and enhancements. We also added perlbrew and a number of other Perl packages." > > I would hat of Amazon drops Perl. TWiki is also deployed in the Amazon > cloud by many companies. I wrote a blog post about this, > http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Blog/BlogEntry201105x2 What's in their announcement isn't the same as "dropping perl", it's still in the repo regardless. And v5.16 which is better than some other distribution providers I could name. > > "Please let us know if you have feedback or concerns about any of these > plans." > > I recommend complaining about considering removing Perl. Message-ID: <5348A5DB.1060203@vmbrasseur.com> Please come join us for Lightning Talks! Two hours, plenty of speakers, each given five minutes to make their point. While we naturally have a particular fondness for Perl-specific talks, we're interested in any topic which is of interest to the San Francisco Perl community. We are diverse people with equally diverse interests and skill sets. We want our Lightning Talks to reflect that diversity. If you've never given a talk before, this is a great way to dip your toe into the public speaking waters. If you'd like help preparing or practicing for your talk, please contact me and I'll be glad to meet with you and lend a hand. To get more information, to RSVP to attend the event, or to sign up to speak, hit up the link! http://www.meetup.com/San-Francisco-Perl-Mongers/events/176699152/ If you're a member of other tech communities here in the Bay Area, please share this event invitation (both attending & speaking) with them. We love the different perspectives and experiences which other communities bring to the party. Work with Tim Bunce. Message-ID: <534AD8F4.5030606@vmbrasseur.com> Tim wrote me this morning & told me about a job which has just opened up at the company where he works: http://www.tigerlead.com/jobs/senior-software-engineer/ While they'd prefer someone who can be on site, he says they'll consider telecommuting (for instance, Tim is still in the UK). He then told me how much he enjoys working at this company. It sounds like a lovely place to be. If you're not interested in the gig, please take a moment to boost the signal. It behooves us to do everything possible to support Perl companies. :-) 1; --V From sfpm at vmbrasseur.com Sun Apr 13 12:09:27 2014 From: sfpm at vmbrasseur.com (VM Brasseur) Date: Sun, 13 Apr 2014 12:09:27 -0700 Subject: [sf-perl] Please sign up to do a lightning talk! Message-ID: <534AE0E7.4020406@vmbrasseur.com> Five minutes. You can talk about a subject for five measly little minutes, can't you? Sure! We all can. Then please sign up to do a Lightning Talk on May 6th: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_7t8sfNV6xocSDr78viazmVW73WjXa7Oh-W3eu8Q3gY/viewform If you're interested in speaking but don't have a topic, contact me! You're a fantastically interesting person, you just may not realize HOW interesting. We'll work together to find a subject on which you can hold forth for five minutes. And I'll help you work on the presentation. There's nothing to it. Lemme prove that to you. You have an idea but it's not Perl-y? Fret not! When's the last time you worked on a stack which was 100% one language or technology? (probable answer: NEVER) While we love Perl, we understand that it's only one part in a complicated system. Hearing more about ANYTHING which can make our lives easier would be divine, be that thing Perl or Javascript or devops or just any ol' thing. You have an idea but it's not even tech-related? Again: Fret not! We are, each of us, more than technologists. We're complex humans with diverse interests and passions. This is part of what makes us such great coworkers. Want to talk about the Agile Approach to Cheese Making? Home Automation without Skynet? How to Poach the Perfect Egg? Hacking Frequent Flyer Miles for Fun and Profit? Bring it on! Never spoken before? This is the most low-impact way to get started. It's only five minutes, so there's not a lot of investment required. Also: You're never going to find a friendlier audience. We think you're swell and want you to succeed. Come! Speak to us! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_7t8sfNV6xocSDr78viazmVW73WjXa7Oh-W3eu8Q3gY/viewform From sfpm at vmbrasseur.com Fri Apr 25 12:32:23 2014 From: sfpm at vmbrasseur.com (VM Brasseur) Date: Fri, 25 Apr 2014 12:32:23 -0700 Subject: [sf-perl] We need more lightning talkers (and attendees!)
