Ah right.  I've been meaning to mention here that the Silicon Valley
Perl group has been doing some good talks of late... I haven't made it
to one yet, though, and I'm going to have to miss this one, too:

I haven't done any interlanguage comparisons yet, myself, but
Christiansen argues persuasively that unicode handling may be perl's
