I would suggest an alternative world of "stay away from shared hosting
if you want a peaceful life".  Perl runs just fine, but with shared
hosting you never know what you are getting behind the scenes.

Linux based virtual private servers (VPS) are pretty cheap to host on
nowadays, and they give you full control of the web server.  Which not
everyone needs, but it sounds like you have gotten to that power user
stage where you want control over how the web server is setup.
