Everyone is different, but these are my recommendations:

- Avoid chairs with arms. Invariably, they get in the way (or,
worse, encourage really bad habits like resting your elbows on them).

- If you are having ergonomic problems now, try to analyse the
situation and isolate the causes before you buy a chair. (If you are
having specific problems, I probably have a slew of recommendations.)

- Think about the positions of your monitor and keyboard as well.
If you optimize these first, you will know better what kind of chair
to get. Unfortunately, this may entail getting a new desk as well. :/

That's it; I don't have any specific recommendations on brands.

While we're on the topic, I am thinking of buying a new desk.
I tend to switch back and forth between a desktop and a laptop
for ergonomic reasons. I think my best bet is to get something
that lets adjust monitor height instantly (and ideally keyboard
height too), so what I really need a desk that consists of two
planes, each of which can be moved up or down easily.

Does anyone know of such a beast, offhand? Maybe I should just
go to Office Depot?
