Because you... 1) hate compiling the entire Gtk2-Perl stack by hand on Windows -or- 2) hate compiling the DBD libraries (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, ODBC) by hand on Windows and would rather have someone do it for you instead of installing a compiler of some sort, and then munging with Makefiles and whatnot in order to get things to compile on Windows, and then installing it, and then maintaining it. Most of the packages that I include with Camelbox don't come with ActiveState, and it's a royal pain for anyone to get all of the things I include working on any Windows Perl, let alone ActiveState. In any case, Camelbox is licensed under the same terms as Perl itself (Perl Artistic *or* GPLv1). Camelbox does come with PAR, however, PAR is not "perfect", meaning I've yet to come up with a workable solution for wrapping anything having to do with Gtk2-Perl. The PAR FAQ goes into this a little bit [2]. My experience has been that PAR picks up Gtk2-Perl .dll libraries, but it fails to map them correctly back to their original filenames when they're unpacked in order to run them. Other modules that use straight XS calls and pure-Perl modules should work fine using PAR on Windows. Thanks, Brian [1] http://www.activestate.com/activeperl/license/ (Definitions paragraph #4) [2] http://par.perl.org/wiki/FAQ#My_PAR_executable_needs_some_dynamic_libraries From rforgey at alumni.caltech.edu Thu May 21 17:04:30 2009 From: rforgey at alumni.caltech.edu (Bob Forgey) Date: Thu, 21 May 2009 17:04:30 -0700 Subject: [San-Diego-pm] Release: Camelbox 2009.141.0110Z-tahi In-Reply-To: References: <6340c8bb0905211603p6d5abdc2p83d4eda03f7803cb@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <6340c8bb0905211704s7581904bm93f5657182250602@mail.gmail.com> On Thu, May 21, 2009 at 4:29 PM, Brian Manning wrote: > On Thu, May 21, 2009 at 4:03 PM, Bob Forgey > wrote: > > Can I use Camelbox and PAR to package up a Perl application as a > > single executable for Windows? I'm still very glad to hear about Camelbox, though; it will be very nice to just be able to use CPAN, and not to also have to deal with ActiveState's PPM. Still some confusion on my part. I have downloaded (to XP and its predecessors) and used Perl, MySQL, and some of the others without ever having to compile anything. Thus I suspect the only reason for compiling is to make a Perl .exe application. If you don't use any of the Gtk2-Perl modules, then it sounds like Camelbox will not give you anything more than ActiveState already does. Does this help you at all?
