Hi PerlMongers! I'm trying to write some perl code to log into a system, launch a program, then launch a program on the local system and connect it's stdout to the remote systems stdin, etc. I was thinking Expect.pm would be a good tool for the job, but would like some advice on how to go about using it, or advice on a better way of doing things if there is one. An example sequence for tar would be this: 1) Telnet to the remote system. 2) Login to the remote system. 3) Launch tar xvpf - on the remote system. 4) Launch tar cf - ./ (or whatever) on the local system. 5) Let tar happen. 6) Close down the remote tar. 7) Close down the local tar. 8) Exit. Try tar cf - . | ssh remote-machine tar xvpf - With SSH1 you could set it up and login without a password. I don't know the process for SSH2. There may be an option or two of SSH you need to map stdout locally to stdin remotely. If you don't need to worry about security over the net then you can probably use rsh instead. Telnet would be a bad solution because it's possible for the escape character to show up and you'd have to go through all sorts of contortions to protect that. _ _ _ Bobby Kleemann http://www.neta.com/~rkleeman/ On Wed, 6 Sep 2000, Rick Schlientz wrote: > ~sdpm~ > Guess I'll try sending this again... > > -----Original Message----- > From: Rick Schlientz [mailto:rschlientz@yahoo.com] > Sent: Thursday, August 31, 2000 5:10 PM > To: San Diego Perl Mongers > Subject: Needed - remote login and piped execution script. > > > Hi PerlMongers! > > I'm trying to write some perl code to log into a system, launch a program, > then launch a program on the local system and connect it's stdout to the > remote systems stdin, etc. I was thinking Expect.pm would be a good tool > for the job, but would like some advice on how to go about using it, or > advice on a better way of doing things if there is one. > > An example sequence for tar would be this: > > 1) Telnet to the remote system. > 2) Login to the remote system. > 3) Launch tar xvpf - on the remote system. > 4) Launch tar cf - ./ (or whatever) on the local system. > 5) Let tar happen. > 6) Close down the remote tar. > 7) Close down the local tar. > 8) Exit. > > Comments? You can call a sub that returns a string here. Also, I think you want the loop wrapped around the inner $q->td(), not inside of it. I might do this: print $q->start_table(), $q->TR( $q->td( $q->start_table(), $q->TR( $q->td(($q->b('RATE')), sub {my $speeds; for ($i=0; $i<=4; $i++) { $speeds .= $q->td($speed[$i]); } return $speeds; }, ), # end row The anonymous sub returns a string of all speeds, each with markup, which is a parameter to $q->TR, which is a parameter to print. BTW, the for loop looks like C (blechh), not Perl, but I left it that way. In tcsh, you can edit your paritally-entered command using control characters like control-A (go to start of line), control-E (go to end of line), ESC-f (advance over word), etc. So I'd like to write a program, preferrably using a Perl module from CPAN, that allows the user to enter a command and edit it using the control and escape keys like tcsh. I looked at several CPAN modules in the Term family but couldn't find one that clearly had this feature. These editing control characters are used by emacs and Matlab as well tcsh, so I think they're common enough that a module would've been written. -- John Comeau (john.comeau@conexant.com) 858-713-3593 (W) ------------------------------------------------------- Sie beschimpfte ihn, einen Vogel zu haben. The doc says you can mix, but you have to use a separate function to retrieve them: "It is possible for a script to receive CGI parameters in the URL as well as in the fill-out form by creating a form that POSTs to a URL containing a query string (a ``?'' mark followed by arguments). The param() method will always return the contents of the POSTed fill-out form, ignoring the URL's query string. To retrieve URL parameters, call the url_param() method. Use it in the same way as param(). The main difference is that it allows you to read the parameters, but not set them." Anyway, hidden fields are cleaner, and don't need a separate function. ------------------------------------------------------------- Alan Stewart )-[]-( Electronics Engineer Code D621 ~ ~ Network Operations SPAWARSYSCEN ~ ~ \ Satellite Communications 53560 Hull St ( ~ ~ ) tel (619)524-3625 San Diego,CA __|___ /| fax (619)524-2607 92152-5001 ^\____/^^^^^^\ __| |_ astewart@spawar.navy.mil -------------^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^\__|______|_------------------------- ~sdpm~ The posting address is: san-diego-pm-list@hfb.pm.org List requests should be sent to: majordomo@hfb.pm.org If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can send mail to with the following command in the body of your email message: unsubscribe san-diego-pm-list If you ever need to get in contact with the owner of the list, (if you have trouble unsubscribing, or have questions about the list itself) send email to . Where do people take code that they want to have reviewed ? I work as a scientist, and most of my programming is for personal use, and as such only has to live up to the standard of accomplishing the task at hand. Recently, I have been working on a set of modules for working with things footbag. I would like to make them freely available, but feel that my code probably isn't up to par. Where should i take it for review and comments ? Hi Mike - I don't get to add anything constructive here - but here I can. I guess the earliest implementation of what you ask is a counter as an ssi. A page which talks about the concept od this is here: http://www.bignosebird.com/sdocs/execs.shtml The short answer, include a perl cgi as a server side include. So far I've got: #! /usr/local/bin/perl $basedir = "/home/wobblewire/html/avengers_site/images/"; opendir(DIR, $basedir); @files = grep(/\.gif$/,readdir(DIR)); closedir(DIR); srand(time ^ $$); $num = rand(@files); # Pick a Random Number print "\n"; When I run it directly it seems to work ok: [wobblewire@bizcom cgi-bin]$ perl rnd_image.cgi [wobblewire@bizcom cgi-bin]$ perl rnd_image.cgi But now I try to embed it into my html doc and it doesn't work at all:
This prints out Nothing. Permissions on rnd_image.cgi are wide open. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance! Permissions on rnd_image.cgi are wide open. Don't use $basedir for the print, use the corresponding (hopefully) path your web-server uses, from the Document Root Directory of the web-server.
