From daoswald at gmail.com Thu Mar 14 15:30:57 2013 From: daoswald at gmail.com (David Oswald) Date: Thu, 14 Mar 2013 16:30:57 -0600 Subject: [Saltlake-pm] Salt Lake Perl Mongers 2.0 Message-ID: I wanted to take a moment to re-invite any old Salt Lake Perl Mongers to participate in the newly re-organized group. We'll try to follow the format of Los Angeles Perl Mongers and Thousand Oaks Perl Mongers, where I was an active participant until recently (and in the case of TO-PM, a co-organizer). That format is: A monthly meeting with one or two presentations on topics of interest to Perl hackers. Occasionally an "emergency social meet" when, for whatever reason, the primary meeting fails to occur. If we come up with a business who is Perl-friendly we'll try to use that venue for regular meetings. Some businesses (particularly at Los Angeles Perl Mongers) are even happy to provide pizza for the meetings. ...otherwise, we'll find our own meeting places, and possibly get together somewhere else afterward post-meeting appetizers, etc. The mailing list is open for any Perl-friendly discussion. Within a few hours of sending this email, we ought to have a pretty good idea of who is still around after 11 years. Please feel free to introduce yourselves. My name is Dave Oswald. I recently relocated (back) to Salt Lake City, from Los Angeles. I do consulting, since that best fits my current "daddy-duty" schedule. Once the youngest is school aged I'll probably get back into something more regular, but for now, I'm "Just another (happy) Perl hacker,". Message-ID: I've announced the group's reboot on Perl Monks: http://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=1023752 Let's see if we can turn good intentions into an actionable plan. We need: * Presenters with topics. * A venue for our first meeting. * Some consensus on what our regular meeting schedule should be (ie, 2nd Tuesday each month at 7:00pm?) So, does anyone know who would be willing to host our first meeting? Would anyone like to present? Or at least does anyone have a topic they would like to see presented? How does the 2nd Tuesday each month sound? ...what alternatives would be better? I was talking to Peter Bowen (ValueClick, Thousand Oaks) a couple months back. He made the excellent point that Perl needs young, up-coming programmers to take an interest. Does anyone have ideas of how we might gain the interest of CS students at the U of U, and SLCC? Strike while the iron is hot, right? The best presentations seem to happen when someone is actually interested in something, and enjoys sharing it. So, is there some module you recently (re)discovered, put to use, etc? Is there a technique or paradigm you find useful? Have you written something cool? Was there a "light bulb flicking on" moment sometime in the past month or so that you'd like to share? Was Perl somehow involved? We're looking for one or two presenters for a possible April meeting. I recently did a presentation on the nuts and bolts of building a CPAN distribution. Would that be of any interest? It's sparse for now, but at least it's something to link to that will provide people with enough information to join our group. http://saltlake.pm.org Spread the word. :) -- David Oswald daoswald at gmail.com From daoswald at gmail.com Tue Mar 26 14:57:45 2013 From: daoswald at gmail.com (David Oswald) Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2013 15:57:45 -0600 Subject: [Saltlake-pm] How is the 2nd Tuesday in April at 7:00pm? Message-ID: How would people feel about trying the 2nd Tuesday in April, at 7:00pm for a Perl Mongers meeting? That would be April 9th, 2013, at 7:00pm. If I can get a handful of people to say they can and will make it, then we'll work on the "where" and "what" details. Message-ID: Can anyone recommend, suggest, or volunteer a venue for our April 9th meeting? ?Some examples: LA Perl Mongers usually use the conference room at Demand Media, in Santa Monica. ?Thousand Oaks Perl Mongers use the conference room at Value Click in Thousand Oaks, CA. ?Unix Users Association of Southern California use the meeting room in Media Temple (Culver City). ? If we don't have anyone come forward with that type of offer I may try to find an available meeting room at one of the Salt Lake County libraries. ? The format: We could have one or two presentations, and then anyone who wants to can reconvene somewhere nearby for a bite to eat. ?If no presenters step forward I'll probably offer a discussion on whatever happens to interest me at the moment (TBA this coming week).
