Message-ID: <1026085701.3d28d34555581@www.mecworks.com> Hello All- I am glad to hear from so many that are interested in a Perl group for Salt Lake. Welcome to all who have joined the mail list. I appologize for letting so much time go by. I think that this perl mongers group is a great idea, unfortunately I am struggling to find time for it. I am a full time student at the U, and (probably like many of you!) have little free time. It has been an on-going concern for me to figure out what next to do despite being unable to commit time to it. It occured to me to ask you all what we should do. So, I'd like to open up a dicussion and hear from you about what you'd like to get from this group. Where do you think we should go from here? I'm open to any and all input. Regular meetings - not necessarily monthly, but maybe every two or three months. What about Perl workshops? The best thing we can do as a group of Perl enthusiasts is to spread the word about how darn cool Perl is and why we use it. Why do we prefer it over Python, Java, and PHP (when we do)? Perl Demo Days? That may be a lot to ask of a group of professional programmers who aren't sure how much time they have to devote to a user group, but, with planning, I think we could pull it off... if we want to. -=Fozz -- Doran L. I was thinking along the same lines. Maybe have a few presentations each meeting on what people are doing with perl in their projects, cool/helpful perl modules, or short tutorial workshops. I'm interested to see how perl is being used by others, and show off some cool perl projects. We could also have perl obfuscation or perl poetry contests. Or panel discussions. Or intro to perl nights for beginners. Do these ideas seem practical? I'd like to think so. What do you think? Any other ideas? -spencer christensen spencer@mecworks.com ----------------------------------------- Salt Lake Perl Mongers group To post messges, send email to saltlake-pm@pm.org Web site: http://saltlake.pm.org To unsubscribe, send a blank email message to saltlake-pm@pm.org with "unsubscribe" as the subject. Why don't we start by meeting each other? I suggest dinner at Chili's (the one on 400 South) on July 31st @ 7:00pm (the last wednesday of the month). I'm not much of a talker, I'm a doer. Everyone who want's to go should RSVP. Feel free to bring your significant other if they don't mind a bunch of Perl hackers talking shop. There we can hash out what we want to accomplish. Even though I'm quite busy, my dedication to Perl and it's promotion is very high. If only a few people can come, that's okay. A start is a start. -Ryan Simpkins Owner ryansimpkins.com, inc. >Quoting "Doran L. Time to think of another idea. Lunch sounds cool. Can someone suggest a time and place? I also have a question. I have a Debian 2.1 (potato) box with Perl 5.6.1 that I installed via CPAN. It took forever to get the installation just right with all my favorite modules in place. Of course the latest version of Debian has come out 2.2 (woody) that includes Perl 5.6.1. My question is - what will happen to my custom installation of 5.6.1 if I upgrade these boxes using apt-get or dselect? It seems to me that so many .deb packages rely on Perl that I can't simply choose to not install the Perl packages without getting a lot of dependency warnings. Unfortunately I don't have a test box to try this out on, only 3 production servers. Has anyone else out there done this? Also, what experience have you all had with installing 5.8.0? Did things go smooth, or were there hitches? -Ryan At 10:36 PM 7/29/02 -0600, you wrote: >Quoting Ryan : > > > I've got a great idea. Why don't we start by meeting each other?
