Dear Perl Monger Leaders,

If your website isn't hosted on the groups.pm.org server, you can skip
this email.

On November 1st, 2009, we are planning to change the default charset
that the webserver reports from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8.

This will make it easier for those of you who require special
characters to use them on the website.  (Sadly, Klingon characters are
not yet included.)

If your current site uses accented characters in ISO-8859-1 (aka "high
bit" characters) you will need to convert them to UTF-8.

The easiest way to do this is to run:
 cp filename filename.orig
 iconv -f ISO-8859-1 -t UTF-8 filename.orig > filename
(across all your files)

Remember, you need to do this on your local copy and re-upload them.

If your site only uses HTML Entities (i.e. &eacute;) to represent
accented characters, you don't need to change anything.

I've taken a quick scan over the files, and most fall into that latter
category.

If you have any questions, please email support на pm.org.  If you have a
lot of files to convert, let us know, and we will try and help.

Толь, не побоясь показатся ретроградом, скажу, что вообщето однобайтная 
кодировка для людей, пишуших на одном языке это вполне приемлемо, а с 
другой стороны экономия траффика.
Тут я конечно не учитываю иероглифы, но всёже.
Переход на утээф - это личное дело каждого, и переходить на него конечно 
придётся, но можно и отложить, это как с IPv6, пока не поджимает, но 
вроде как бы надо.


Что то я точно зануда сегодня ...

Полностью согласен. И не только экономия трафика, но и заметный
прирост в скорости работы баз данных (см. в штатной документации
главу по оптимизации того же MySQL - экономят каждый байт в размерах
полей).

Но для таких глобальных проектов как *.pm.org без поддержки
многоязычности никак...
