Someone from Houston.pm pointed out that I had left out an explanation
of what SVG is. So, here's a quick overview.

SVG is an XML-based 2D vector graphics format. It supports scripting
(through ecmascript) and declarative animation (through SMIL). It also
supports somewhat advanced filtering features which can produce some
really spectacular effects.

It is currently supported natively in Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and the
Webkit-based browsers. There are plugins for IE. The currently plugins
have not been updated for a while, but new ones are on the horizon.

SVG is currently used quite a bit in the GIS and cartography fields.
It is also getting strong support in the mobile phone area. KDE also
uses SVG extensively in it's newer versions.

For more information, you can check http://planetsvg.com/. It is a new
site maintained by the SVG Interest Group.

There's an SVG developers group on Yahoo, which serves as a gathering
place for people developing with SVG.

The SVG Wiki is located at http://wiki.svg.org/Main_Page.

There's an Apache project, Batik. It is a java library for working with
SVG. There are also a few libraries on CPAN.

I hope that gives a bit more background and generates a bit more
interest.

Why do your people ask if someone's ready right before you are going to
do something massively unwise? -- Delenn - "The War without End"
