Hello, world!

This is Simon Cozens, managing editor of www.perl.com, here to
bring you the week's news and developments both in the Perl
world and on our own site.

* Perl at large.

The huge, big, amazing news this week was the announcement by DynDNS
during the Perl Whirl cruise that they would be donating $20,000 to
the Perl Foundation's Grant Fund drive. This spurred a whole host of
individual donations, and the current total including the new $20K
stands at just over $81,000, over half way there. Huge thanks to
DynDNS! Could this prompt you into action?

One of the authors of "Running Weblogs with Slash", chromatic, has
written an article for the O'Reilly Network explaining how to extend
Slash using your own plugins; he demonstrates the Wiki plugin, and
explains the features that Slash provides for web application authors.
Oh, and a new version of the Slash::Gallery image gallery plugin
is out.

* What's new on perl.com

Bryan Warnock brings us another Perl 6 summary, this time covering
the new Apocalypse, Parrot string handling, and more...

How did you get started using Perl? I'll bet you the majority of
your answers will have something to do with CGI. So why is it,
then, that the vast majority of CGI code available on the web isn't
of the highest quality? Dave Cross looks at how it could be better,
and what he's doing about it.

Enjoy,
SC
