Hello, world!

This is Simon Cozens, managing editor of www.perl.com, here to
bring you the week's news and developments both in the Perl
world and on our own site.

* Perl at large.

If you've ever seen Slashdot or use.perl.org, then you have used
a great piece of software called Slash. What you might not have
realised is that the technology which powers Slashdot is all Perl,
and it's a very flexible way to create weblog-style sites. In fact,
we think it's so good that we have a new book coming out explaining
how to use it yourself.

And speaking of Slash, one of the guys who hacks on Slash is Chris
Nandor, better known to Perl people as the MacPerl maintainer.
Chris has been a busy man, and this week he released the 3rd beta
of MacPerl 5.6.1. This is probably going to be the last beta before
the real release, so it's your last chance to beat on it for bugs!

And finally, the ritual self-humiliation; back in November, I
attended the Little Languages conference at MIT, and wrote a
report for you all about it. This month's Dr. Dobb's Journal
contains an article on the conference, along with audio and
video feeds of the event. (Including some lunatic on the end
raving about Parrot development.)

* What's new on perl.com

In this week's (quite brief) Perl 6 summary, Bryan updates us on
the latest state of the Parrot interpreter, plus a couple of
language questions.

Our Perl/Tk guru, Steven Lidie, returns this week to tell us how
to create custom widgets in Tk. While creating a custom widget
class, he takes in Photos objects, modal dialog boxes, balloon
help, and a bunch of other Tk goodies to make a very different
style of color picker widget...

Enjoy,
SC
