Hello, world, and Happy New Year! This is Simon Cozens,
www.perl.com managing editor, bringing you the latest goings
on from the world of Perl and our own site.

* Perl at large.

I hope all of you and your families have had a restful holiday
season and a pleasant New Year! Thanks to the holidays, there
hasn't been an amazing amount of Perl things going on, so this
week's news is pretty brief.

But that doesn't mean it's not important! For starters, the Call
For Participation in this year's Perl Conference has been announced.
As last year, it's in the Sheraton San Diego, and is between
July 22nd and 26th. I'll be there, of course, and I hope to see
you there too!

Oh, and speaking of conferences, don't forget the Bioinformatics
Conference in Tucson at the end of the month - it's not too late
to get yourself signed up.

And, of course, there's this year's Yet Another Perl Conference
Europe. YAPC::Europe 2002 is on "The Science of Perl", from
18-20 September in Munich, Germany. Papers are solicited now!

Finally, yes, I've mentioned it before, but Yet Another Society's
Perl Development Grant funding drive is still on, and still a
worthy cause for those wanting to give something back to the Perl
community. The total currently stands at nearly $45k of the $175k
target. Please consider how you or your company could help sponsor
Damian and Dan to do great things for Perl in 2002.

* What's new on www.perl.com?

The indefatigable Bryan Warnock brings us two Perl 6 summaries,
covering the holiday period and before. Some very cool advancements
to Parrot have happened in the past couple of weeks, including the
surprise addition of a lightning-fast Just In Time compiler, so
make sure you catch up!

With all the fuss about bioinformatics - and, of course, the
aforementioned bioinformatics conference coming up - I wondered
what would happen if, instead of explaining to biochemists how to
program Perl, we explained to Perl programmers how to get into
bioinformatics. I put the question to James Tisdall, the author
of O'Reilly's "Beginning Perl For Bioinformatics", and this week's
article is his response.
