When looking for info on learning Perl, I'd recommend staying away from
"web stuff" until you get comfortable with the language.  It's true that
Perl is used very much on the web, but that's not the only place it's
used.  Trying to learn the nuances of both Perl and CGI at the same time
can be a daunting task.

A good book to learn with is "Learning Perl", from O'Reilly.  It's
really the only good tutorial type of thing that I know of.

Which brings up an interesting point, and possibly a project for
Rochester.pm.  Since there aren't many easily accessible tutorials out
there, what about getting together and writing a beginner's tutorial to
be included with the Perl distribution?
