Actually I got into it gradually. Two years ago I modified a form-to-email script for our web site and had no idea what I was doing, but managed to get it to work. Then last spring I was determined to get a search engine up on our web site, and had to learn some perl. That was followed by installing a message board (Selena Sol/extropia.com script) with a couple of useful modifications. Last summer a local mortician asked if we could post obituaries on our community web site. I didn't want to have to code those obits myself, so I wrote a cgi script so the morticians' can load the obits themselves. Now I really had the perl bug. So when our library director asked me to write a cgi so she can post a list of new books, I was thrilled. I am a family physician and computerphile in Dansville, a village of 5000. I am co-webmaster for our community web site Dansville Community Home Page http://dansville.lib.ny.us and I dare say it is a great resource for the community. I also volunteer at our local library and school district, helping with various computer issues. Some of my scripts are posted on my URL. http://www.servtech.com/~tjwitte/tony.html Feel free to use them. I'm particularly fond of the mailing list script and the book list. So far in learning Perl I used Quigley's "Perl by Example" but was particulary helped by O'Reilly's "Learning Perl," and "Quick Reference Guide." And the site http://www.cgi101.com/ was very helpful as well. Tony Witte Dansville, NY From webmaster at rochester.rr.com Wed Jan 20 07:54:31 1999 From: webmaster at rochester.rr.com (Justin C. Unfortunately there have been no classes offered here at RIT for PERL, so I have been learning it on my own. I've only been toying with it for the past few months so I guess I can be considered the newbie of the group. :) However, I will be using PERL extensively soon for creating online forms that retrieve from databases. Though I'm not an avid fan of programming, I have several years of C++ and VB experience, but PERL captivated me as easier (syntax-wise) and much more fun to learn (structure-wise) than say, C++. Therefore I'm anxious to learn more. Nice to know that a few share my interests. -Drew From rmd0549 at ritvax.isc.rit.edu Wed Jan 20 15:25:57 1999 From: rmd0549 at ritvax.isc.rit.edu (rmd) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:19:44 2004 Subject: [rochester-pm-list] Bob here too! As of now, I consider myself fairly well versed in PERL. I have been programming for several years and am experienced in C/C++, the Windows 95/98/NT API, MFC, Visual Basic, HTML, JavaScript, VBScript etc... and of course, my favorite, GWBasic. (joke ;-) PERL is a great language to learn since the majority of CGIs are written in them. I first started fooling around with C based CGIs and found them not nearly as 'flowing' as those written in PERL. While ASP technology is extremely useful as well, being an IT professional means I have to be fluent in both. I think this mailing list is a great idea and look forward to more news! I hate to talk about myself but since you've twisted my arm I'll do it this once. I work for West Group (the entity which swallowed LCP) which has been described as the Microsoft of legal publishing. I'm mainly doing SGML processing, and have managed to spread the love of Perl throughout my department. (People used to use C++ for all their text processing - yee.) Now that it's fully entrenched I'm starting to evangelize for Python since I think it ends up being more maintainable when you have an endless procession of no-talents like myself hacking and rehacking the same pieces of code. Nevertheless Perl retains my deep affection for being so weird and twisty. James _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? It's true that Perl is used very much on the web, but that's not the only place it's used. Trying to learn the nuances of both Perl and CGI at the same time can be a daunting task. A good book to learn with is "Learning Perl", from O'Reilly. It's really the only good tutorial type of thing that I know of. Which brings up an interesting point, and possibly a project for Rochester.pm. Since there aren't many easily accessible tutorials out there, what about getting together and writing a beginner's tutorial to be included with the Perl distribution? Brian
