Our social meetings usually start at 19:00, 19:30, and Lapa is a kinda
safe and crowded area, with plenty of bars and possibly live music, if
you walk around before the ESX. The recommendations are the usual ones:
keep your valuables out of sight, keep your wits about you, and don't
walk too far out of the crowded areas.

As for the cabs, the idea is to get a cab that belongs to a cab
association. It's the yellow ones with a dark blue line across each
side, with the association's name and phone in a largish type, in the
back of each side. Bonus points if you take note of the number assigned
to the cab within the association (usually in large print, too). Google
Maps' routing for Rio de Janeiro works very well, so if you have a
smartphone with GPS, you can check if driver is doing anything funny
with the route (like, looping around). If you don't have a mobile data
plan that works here, you can use GMaps' cache feature while on wifi, to
have map imagery with you later, while offline.
