From mark at purdue.edu Mon Feb 6 05:37:04 2017 From: mark at purdue.edu (Mark Senn) Date: Mon, 06 Feb 2017 08:37:04 -0500 Subject: [Purdue-pm] Perl 6 Message-ID: <37060.1486388224@pier.ecn.purdue.edu> (The information below is based on information pointed to by http://perlweekly.com/archive/289.html and other sources.) A $42.99 partial draft of _Think Perl 6, How to Think Like a Computer Scientist_ is out. See http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920065883.do for more info. I'll request that Purdue Libraries add this to http://proquestcombo.safaribooksonline.com/ so Purdue folks can read it for free. Comment from me: Learning Perl 6 all at one time may be prohibitively difficult. I suggest using it for very easy prorams now. It will be easier to learn that way---it would be easy to put off learning Perl 6 and not be able to save time in the long run---my uncle still programs in COBOL as his primary (and I think only) language other than maybe some shell aliases. I think Perl 6 is a much better language than Perl 5. Perl QA Hackathon has been renamed Perl Toolchain Summut. Rakudo Star (a useful and usable production distribution of Perl 6) is available. See http://rakudo.org/2017/01/30/announce-rakudo-star-release-2017-01/ This is an easiest way to install Perl 6 on a Linux computer---I haven't tried other opeerating systems. YAPC::NA (Yet Another Perl Conference, North America) has been renamed The Perl Conference, NA. Call for presentations is open---deadline is 2017-03-06 (that's an ISO 8601 date for March 6). Comment from me: I prefer watching the talks on You Tube. It's cheaper and more efficient than going to the conference---overall (based on 24 hour days) the information density of the conference is pretty low. -mark From jacoby.david at gmail.com Wed Feb 8 08:52:03 2017 From: jacoby.david at gmail.com (Dave Jacoby) Date: Wed, 8 Feb 2017 11:52:03 -0500 Subject: [Purdue-pm] Reminder: Perl Mongers Today!
