From kandrian at teksystems.com Wed Oct 13 13:35:10 2010 From: kandrian at teksystems.com (Andriano, Krista) Date: Wed, 13 Oct 2010 16:35:10 -0400 Subject: [Princeton-pm] Princeton Perl Mongers Message-ID: <6B70F76238CBCA44968B3322F169CD256C391286B3@EXCH-MBX04.allegisgroup.com> To All, I am sending this e-mail because I am new to the IT industry and especially regarding Perl. I work for TEKsystems as an IT recruiter and I am currently working on Perl requirement. Would any of you have some time to speak with me regarding Perl for some education on the program language. I have conducted my own research, but still find it challenging to understand the whole concept revolving it. This is not what so ever an e-mail asking if you might know any Perl Developers, but rather I am looking to be educated on this skill. I would greatly appreciate any assistance or guidance that you can provide. Also, I saw on the Princeton-PM website that there was a meeting in September; will there be another one in October? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Krista Krista Andriano, TEKsystems 1 Sylvan Way, 1st Floor, Parsippany NJ 07054 T 973.630.2352 F 973.630.7091 kandrian at teksystems.com [cid:image001.gif at 01CAFB31.0C321AE0] ________________________________ This electronic mail (including any attachments) may contain information that is privileged, confidential, and/or otherwise protected from disclosure to anyone other than its intended recipient(s). If you agree to buy the coffee at a centrally located site and a mutually agreeable time, I'm sure you'd get attendees. I'm sure the people that have shown up at the meetings we have had would be willing to help you out. I see you're in Parsippany. I'm also working in Parsippany. If you'd like to get together for lunch some day we could flesh out your requirements and post them to the mailing list. If I were to bluntly and directly answer your question about learning the Perl programming language, I'd recommend books like "Learning Perl". I would also recommend you get a Linux box, run "perldoc perldoc", and "perldoc perl" and read. If you are talking about learning the "culture", there are some things you must learn, and some you must unlearn. Some people are nit-picky. For instance, from your email: "I am currently working onPerl requirement", that's missing an 'a' or an 's' somewhere. Probably an 'a'. When people who deal with this stuff all the time, like me for instance, they think "that was blindly copied and pasted into a hastily written template email". That puts us off a bit. The next sentence is missing a question mark. I shall quote the all truthful wikipedia for an article on culture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_(programmer_subculture) You should also verse yourself in the Jargon file, which is referenced in there. Now, to speak more seriously: Your company's skill assessment tests were severely out dated and irrelevant, especially with regard to Perl. They were just terrible. On a lighter note, yes, learn Perl. Perl is good. uberspaced On Wed, Oct 13, 2010 at 4:35 PM, Andriano, Krista wrote: > To All, > > I am sending this e-mail because I am new to the IT industry and especially > regarding Perl.
