Well, Dave said Tuesday, but basically said he was flexible, and I don't care, though I prefer it not be Wednesdays. I telecommute every day except for Wednesdays, which is when I drive to Acton. >3.> Let me know if there is anything that I can do to help. Well, I'm sure we'll get something going soon, and it will be announced here on the list. -- Chris Nandor | pudge@pobox.com | http://pudge.net/ Andover.Net | chris.nandor@andover.net | http://slashcode.com/ From dave at davew.com Thu Aug 17 08:22:45 2000 From: dave at davew.com (Dave Wagner) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:18:43 2004 Subject: FYI Message-ID: Hello everyone, I'd like to say hello to everyone and introduce myself to everyone who joined our newly created list yesterday. My name is Dave and I started the Plymouth PM some time ago but just like everyone else taking on new projects, I haven't found much time to make it happen. Thanks to Chris we have a quick jump start and a half-dozen people on the list. About me - I'm a fairly new Perl programmer, about a year of straight use, 3 years overall. But like everyting else I do that is computer related I have caught on quick. I have read Perl Programming, Learning Perl 2nd Edition, Perl the complete reference and I am currently reading Learning Perl 3rd Edition. I own an audio video installation/retail company. The tie in is that I have been making business sites and their programming for years and I now have stopped that and I am now programming only for our company, developing a Perl based home automation system that is self contained and serves as a home proxy, security, lighting and home networking file system. My current systems are, 2 Win2000 boxes, NT Server box and a Linux box. I mainly use one of the Win2000 boxes, use the NT for files and the Linux for development. If there is anything else you need to know about me, just ask. Oh yea, I'm 39 bald and I ride a bike.... if that matters :) I own a store in Norwell, on RT 53. We can use it for meetings. I have a 42 plasma TV there with a Win2000 box attached with cable modem access as well as hooked up to a $4000 surround package. (You thought you had a nice monitor). The store is new and our grand openning is within a month, but it is ready for our use now. We can have meetings any evening, just send your preference to me at dave@davew.com, include any night you absolutely CANNOT make it. The official group web site should be up by the end of the week. I'll post all group info there, meetings, locations, library books we have available, members, etc. The address is http://plymouth.pm.org In closing, welcome, and let's get some meetings going! In the meantime please invite any local Perl Mongers to our list.... The only day I couldn't come is Friday. Tuesdays would be a pain as well, as it's the only day I consistently make the commute into Boston for work [bows again to his cable modem]. As for me, my name is Sean Quinlan. I work at the BioMolecular Engineering Research Center (bmerc-www.bu.edu) at BU. Most of my job is maintaining the web site, our local 'database', and doing whole genome analysis and comparison. When I started this job almost two years ago I only knew a limited amount of Perl (I'd read learning perl and done some very minimal cgi for forms parsing). For the last two years I've been using Perl day in and day out. I'd probably be much better at programming Perl, but since so much of the stuff I get as raw data changes in format week to week, I do a _lot_ of abusive one liners and one shot scripts. Also, I have been considering doing a mongers BBQ at my house sometime in mid/late September. We live in Medway (near Franklin and the intersection of 109 and 495). The house we live in is on the 15 acre farm (horse riding) where my wife works. We have about an acre of front lawn with a few trees and a pond out back. Good/bad date suggestions would be appreciated, but the final arbiter is the show schedule. Sean P. I've built it on top of the Slash engine, which is the same code running Slashdot, and what I work on for my day job. So I can justify twiddling with it at work. :-) Invite whomever you wish to join. The new code has better discussion forums and will provide a nicer appearance and better code for picking and seeing your picks and all that stuff. So just go on over to the site: http://picks.pudge.net/ and create an account and make your picks for the last week of preseason. After that trial run, we'll delete those picks and start over. Let me know (just comment on the site) if you have any problems or whatever. We went over the schedule, and it turns out Sun. Oct. 1st would be best. Sat. Sept. 30th would also be ok. Input on which it should be would be appreciated, but I'd like to have decided on the date by this weekend. Yes, this will be a potluck affair. I work in academics, I'm glad to be able to provide a lawn! ;-} There is lot's of on property parking, plenty of room to play in, outdoor sources of electricity, trees, a pond out back, etc. etc.. Access to a cable modem could be provided, but the hub is on the far side of the house, so I'd need a _lot_ of cat5. The house will be providing a grill, charcoal for said grill, paper plates, some plastic utensils, and a couple cases of beer. If anyone taking public transportation for some leg of the trip doesn't want to hassle with transporting food items(done it, sucks), please email me off the list. I will be happy to pick up food items on your behalf for reimbursement. Now, on the subject of goodies, extra's that is, (man I hated missing a raffle Sat. :}). Does anyone have any suggestions on where/who to contact for some stuff? Sponsorship? And will there be anyone in town we could wrestle into entertaining us? Oh, since my place is probably closer to Worchester than Boston, and Plymouth isn't much further than, this could be a broad ranged social. I've CC'd there contact people - please forward this to your lists. Oh, and hey, here's a listing for NorthAttleboro.pm?!? Anyone, anyone? That is all. -------------------------- Sean Quinlan mailto:seanq@darwin.bu.edu http://bmerc-www.bu.edu/ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." -Benjamin Franklin
