Mark your calendars for this Thursday, May 3rd, at 11:30 a.m. We're scheduled to meet for lunch. Any suggestions for where to eat? I'm looking forward to a suggestion by Steve Smythe. Weather's predicted to be cold & rainy. I'm still hoping to get over to Sky Sox stadium for the National Day of Prayer from 1:30 to 2:00. So having lunch out that way would be nice. We always have excellent geeky conversation at our monthly lunches. We've had a few new members sign up recently. Looking forward to meeting you in RL. # # # CHANGES TO THE LUNCH SCHEDULE The original reason we met the first week of the month was that the Pikes Peak Linux Users Group met the first Friday of the month. Seasoned Perl Mongers will remember that we originally met the Wednesday before the first Friday. Then we switched to the Thursday before the first Friday. Well -- PPLUG has changed its schedule. The PPLUG monthly meeting is April 10th. So first I'll make a proclamation. Unless the group comes to another agreement, we're going to meet the first Thursday of the month. That means the June meeting will be on June 7th, NOT May 31st, which is the Thursday before the first Friday in June. Now I'll take a quick poll -- reply to me if you'd like to see the meeting date & time changed. I'll chime in now. It would be more convenient for me if we slid the lunch to next week, Friday 5/11. But let me be clear: I'm NOT changing the scheduled May lunch unless there's support from a majority of Perl Mongers to do so. # # # PPPM LIBRARY Title: PROGRAMMING PYTHON, 2ND EDITION Author: Mark Lutz Publisher: O'Reilly URL: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/python2/ In Possession Of: Bob Gattis As of: 1 May 2001 Notes: courtesy of O'Reilly; Bob gets to keep the Python t-shirt from O'Reilly. With over 200 talks, 60 tutorials, and 17 rooms, this year's convention, encompassing the Perl Conference 5, the PHP Conference, the 8th Tcl/Tk Conference, XTech, the O'Reilly Summit on Open Source Strategies, and others--is larger (and one day longer) than O'Reilly's previous open source conventions. The increased size of the O'Reilly Open Source Convention also required a change of venue, and the conference planners chose San Diego so that attendees could combine the convention with a little R&R. "Fun, sun, and family activities are endless in San Diego, and this year we're planning more activities for the families of attendees than ever before," says Angela Capo, O'Reilly's Conference Planner. O'Reilly's Open Source Convention is renowned as a gathering of top-notch leaders, experts, and visionaries from all avenues of the open source movement. This year's speakers and panelists include: Larry Wall, Rasmus Lerdorf, Guido van Rossum, Eric S. Raymond, Brian Behlendorf, Damian Conway, W. Phillip Moore, chromatic, David Ascher, Jon Orwant, Mitchell Baker, Tom Christiansen, Simon Cozens, Randal Schwartz, Mark-Jason Dominus, Doug MacEachern, Ray Lischner, and Andy Neely. (For a complete list of speakers, see http://conferences.oreillynet.com/cs/os2001/pub/10/speakers.html) "This year, more than ever, the open source convention is a key event for anyone interested in the future of software," says Tim O'Reilly, founder and president of O'Reilly & Associates. "Even as the hype and stock market valuations of Linux companies are receding, use of open source software development methodologies is on the upswing, as mainstream companies embrace the benefits of collaborative development and open source peer review. What's more, we're in the middle of a technological sea change, as we move from the desktop era to network-centric computing. Open source developers and system administrators need to learn new skills, such as working with XML, building web services with SOAP and XML-RPC, or interfacing with new networking platforms such as Jabber, Gnutella, and Jxta--not to mention working with bigger, more scalable database servers and smaller mobile devices and embedded systems." O'Reilly Open Source Convention and Perl Conference 5 Early Bird Registration through June 22, 2001: http://conferences.oreillynet.com/cs/os2001/pub/10/register.html O'Reilly User Group members are offered 20% discount on all conference session and tutorial fees. No word from Steve. Bob suggested to Texas Roadhouse. Matt suggested Old Chicago. I got no other replies. I'm guessing that most of us will be coming from the west (I'm at Agilent on Garden of the Gods Rd). So I don't want to ask you all to go east for lunch just so I can be closer to the stadium. Besides, based on the lack of replies, it looks like we'll be a small group. So I propose that we meet at Charlies BBQ -- Austin Bluffs and Nevada. That's today at 11:30. Ask for the Perl Mongers table. Please reply if you plan to attend. I don't want to go over there unless there's at least one Perl Monger to talk to. :-) As is my custom, I'm including my phone numbers in case you need to get ahold of me today. And don't be shy about proposing an alternative location for today, especially if you can't stand Charlie's and won't come unless we go somewhere else. I was trying to use sprintf with a C like syntax where you pass a char * as the first parameter and receive an int back, forgetting that sprintf in perl returns the value that you want, and takes your format string as the first parameter. Too many stinkin languages to keep track of, I guess. Thanks for clearing things up on a Monday. Looking for a way to contribute to the Perl Community? Want to work with a Perl Guru and improve your knowledge of Perl? Then come to this year's Perl Apprenticeship "Hour". Adam Turoff will be hosting a 45 minute session at YAPC::America::North this June for Perlfolk to present ideas for interesting Perl projects that probably won't get done without some extra help. Projects may include things like: * documentation * tools * tutorials * bugfixes * modules * enhancements to existing code * websites * collaborative efforts * test code * program suites Presenters will have five minutes to offer a project to the community under one of the following terms: - Free for all Here's a cool idea. Do something with it if you want, it's yours. - Apprenticeship Here's an neat idea. I don't have time to implement it. If you understand the basics, then I encourage you to do something with it. I'll be available to answer your questions on this project. - Flash of Brilliance Here's an interesting project. If you understand what needs to be done, then please do something with it. After today, I cannot answer your questions. - Handoff Here's an worthwhile project. If you understand what needs to be done, then let's discuss it so I can hand the project over to you. After that, I cannot answer your questions. If you have some projects you would like to offer for the Perl Apprenticeship Hour, please send a brief project summary to , including the how you will offer the project to the community. You are encouraged to submit multiple projects. My two choices are: 1. VB, using ADODB as the db connect method 2. Perl, using Win32::GUI and DBI::Oracle I'm leaning towards Perl, because DBI::Oracle properly implements OCI (for free!), plus I have a reasonable amount of Perl coding experience. I'm also leaning towards VB because it has sweet GUI design tools, useful wizards, and async SQL calls. Does anyone know if Perl has useful form designer tools available which are similar to VB? I'm going to put a lot of effort into this project, so I want to ensure that I choose the right environment. I got no replies, so be advised that the monthly Pikes Peak Perl Mongers lunch will be Thursday, June 7th, at 11:30. I kicked off this group in 1999 with a special guest appearance by Eric S. Raymond. He spoke to a joint meeting of the Pikes Peak Linux Users Group and the Pikes Peak Perl Mongers. It turns out he's a Python hacker. Oh, well. A few of you found out about PPPM through that event, anyway. There's been no program activity since then. I've been waiting for the group to grow. Well, it's looking like the chicken and the egg. That is, maybe the group would grow if we had a guest speaker. I don't have the energy right now to organize something, but based on my experience in 1999, I'd be glad to coach a motivated individual to do it. Think of this as a leadership opportunity that you can put on your resume. :-) Contact me if interested. # # # PPPM LIBRARY My memory isn't clear.
