It's that time -- this Friday is the monthly Pikes Peak Linux Users Group meeting. Anyone want to meet for lunch this Wednesday? We did try to meet at the Indian Palate at 11:30 last month, but we crossed paths and didn't get together. Wanna try that time and place again? Please reply to all so we know who to look for. 2. Just a nagging reminder that not everyone has replied with their membership information (http://pikes-peak.pm.org#membership). I think I'm caught up, so if you have any changes, please send me a message with the information you'd like to include (name, e-mail, short bio, URL). If you have a better idea for format, just let me know. I'm even willing to host a home page for you off of http://pikes-peak.pm.org if you want to send me an HTML document and the name of the new URL where you want the document stored. <>< Tim P.S. Feel free to call me at work (590.5570) or on my cellphone (651.0116). Hopefully, that will make it easier to coordinate lunches. Whaddaya think? <>< Tim http://www.divide.net/tbc/hacks/index.html --- Hello, I hope you might be willing to share some of your expertise about Perl in your community. Our recently released book "Elements of Programming with Perl" was written to be a useful resource to those interested in learning how to program using Perl as a first language. We have received lots of feedback indicating that it would be an ideal text for college instructors of introductory Perl courses. It has, in fact, already been adopted by several U.S. schools. In her December '99 book review at perlmonth.com, Rachel Rawlings called it, "the well-written equivalent of a first-year computer science text with all concepts and examples explained in Perl." Tom Christiansen has indicated to us he plans to give the book "5 Camels" and should be posting a review shortly. I am hoping that you have some knowledge of Perl instruction and may know which colleges offer Perl programming courses in your area. You may even know Perl instructors within your Perl Mongers group membership. I would appreciate any information you can pass along to me, such as which schools to contact and, if possible, instructors' names, addresses and phone or email. I am planning to communicate with these individuals either by mail or email. Manning is a small publisher and we try to present our books only to those who would really benefit from them. In appreciation of your valuable information, we will send you one complementary copy of a current or upcoming Manning book for review and raffle at an upcoming Perl Mongers group meeting. You can select it from www.manning.com. Please make sure to include your current address. I hope to hear from you soon and thanks for your help. Regards, Helen Trimes Manning Publications Co. By way of introduction, I hack code for a living (which is cool) and have been trying to convince the Java Servlet-advocating heathen here where I'm working (DiabetesManager.com - Yet Another Internet Startup (TM), involved with doing online diabetes management) that Perl CGI scripts are infintely easier and more functional than trying to use Java to handle requests and build documents. But at least they're not a bunch of Microsoft bigots ... :) I'm running Slackware Linux on my desktop (which is also cool), a move instigated by having NT BSOD on me four times in one week. (BTW, I'm an anti-MS bigot.) As for the personal stuff, I've got 3 young'uns (my daughter Erin's all of one month old now) and an s.o. (might consider getting married one of these days but after the last marriage I'm not too anxious to take that plunge). I have no hobbies other than hacking code, though I'm rapidly heading into that midlife crisis thing and will hopefully be heading down to Phoenix later this year to attend Bob Bondurant's School of High Performance Driving, maybe hit Skip Barber's as well. Michael, Hi! Hi to everyone else as well. I guess I should step up and let everyone know who I am as well... I've been programming since November of 1980 (back when I was knee-high to a grasshopper) and have loved (almost) every minute of it. I've gone through BASIC, Pascal, C, GNU C++, MS Visual C++, Perl, Java, Javascript, Visual Basic, and a few others. These days, I stick to doing all of my programming in Perl, GNU C++, Java and Javascript. I basically pick the language that will best handle the problem at hand. It seems that most of the time Perl is the tool of choice to get the job done. I'm currently working for ChannelPoint as their webmaster. There I do quite a bit with Java, Javascript, HTML and Perl. Most things there are Java since the entire company seems to be heavily vested in the language and to use something else is almost sacreligious. In my spare time I work on an online game called Spear of Insanity that was originally written in C, but I have ported most of the code to C++. That is a work in progress that will probably never be finished. Of course, I'm working full time and going to school part time at UCCS so I don't have a whole lot of free time. I am majoring in Computer Science (what a surprise) and minoring in History. I guess that's enough about me for now... See you all at lunch! -- .-.
