If you want what the GPL is trying to do then I think that's part of the price. If you just want to make your code available to anyone, for whatever purpose, then PD is much better. Note that in some jurisdictions the public domain may not be an option. In those cases MIT/ISC/BSD licenses are short, in plain words, with minimal restrictions. -- Darrin Chandler | Phoenix BSD User Group | MetaBUG dwchandler at stilyagin.com | http://phxbug.org/ | http://metabug.org/ http://www.stilyagin.com/ | Daemons in the Desert | Global BUG Federation From intertwingled at qwest.net Fri May 28 12:28:59 2010 From: intertwingled at qwest.net (intertwingled) Date: Fri, 28 May 2010 12:28:59 -0700 Subject: [Phoenix-pm] Doug Miles Strikes Back In-Reply-To: <4C0015B8.8000305@veritablesoftware.com> References: <20100527191914.GO27196@slowass.net> <4C000CB3.8080907@veritablesoftware.com> <4C000E73.1020104@qwest.net> <4C0015B8.8000305@veritablesoftware.com> Message-ID: <4C00197B.8030802@qwest.net> Douglas: Tempe Perlmongers is alive because I am alive. I can't stand you either, and you're the sole reason I don't show up at meetings or do more than lurk in the local community. Your pattern is well established, recognizable, and without fail, culminates in the same excuses. Now that someone has said something about you, next will come the part where you play the victim. This will likely continue until someone else catches on, and then the 'I'm sorry's will start. It will then die down for a bit, until enough time has passed that you've, and maybe everyone else, has forgotten about the last episode and then it will all begin anew. - billn On Fri, May 28, 2010 at 12:56 PM, intertwingled wrote: > Scottie is just having one of his episodes. ?I am fine. =) > > Tony > > Darrin Chandler wrote: >> >> Would you blacklist me, too? Tony has a history of harassing women at Phoenix.PM meetings to the point that people had to intervene and steer him away with a *slight* threat of force. Because of this, he was nearly banished from meetings. Instead, he did apologize. There's more to the story that extra bit makes it improper for me to just outright demonize him. Still, he's perpetually on thin ice, and after a while, it becomes apparent that it's by design. Darrin has no such excuse. While a long way away from being blacklisted, I did unfriend him on FaceBook =P But that's another story. I am rash at times. -scott On 0, Bill Nash wrote: > I wouldn't say Scott's alone in his viewpoint. I am severely bipolar. Scottie knows this, I don't know why he didn't mention it. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 45. Hell, I didn't even know what bipolar WAS until I was 45. I went to see a psych because I thought I was depressed, but two independent psychiatrists immediately diagnosed me with bipolar illness. I am not going to make any excuses and I am most definitely not going to apologize to Scottie, billn, or any other man or woman, for my behaviour before or after I got diagnosed. billn you can go straight to Hell. You too, Scottie. =) In fact, all of you can go straight to Hell. =) The important thing is that I got diagnosed and now I am on medication that has brought the bipolar illness somewhat under control. Bipolar illness cannot be cured, it can only be controlled. I am on a good combination of medications now but I still have some hypomania and depression, I still get hypomanic and anxiety attacks, and I can be a bit of an asshole. On that last one I don't know if it is because I am bipolar or I am just an asshole. =) I am very lucky as a Veteran of the United States Air Force to qualify for health care under the VA system, otherwise I would not be able to afford my medications. I am a good person. Have a nice day. You WILL be Free, for someone's definition of free that doesn't match the dictionary. I'd rather not get into an advocacy discussion just now. Suffice it to say that GPL and variations match the desires of some, but not all people. If your desire is to share your code with as few restrictions as possible then GPL, et al is a much worse choice than PD or BSD. That's just a fact. If you don't want your code used by evil corporations and in other ways then GPL will serve better, but realize that adding restrictions is not making something more free. I have no problem with people knowingly choosing GPL/LGPL. People *should* choose a license that matches their intent. It's their code. I do take issue with co-opting the word "freedom." -- Darrin Chandler | Phoenix BSD User Group | MetaBUG dwchandler at stilyagin.com | http://phxbug.org/ | http://metabug.org/ http://www.stilyagin.com/ | Daemons in the Desert | Global BUG Federation From awwaiid at thelackthereof.org Sat May 29 11:50:44 2010 From: awwaiid at thelackthereof.org (Brock) Date: Sat, 29 May 2010 14:50:44 -0400 Subject: [Phoenix-pm] unlicense.org In-Reply-To: <20100529160419.GD5181@tuppy.intrepidhosting.net> References: <4C001412.7000004@qwest.net> <20100528192854.GA5181@tuppy.intrepidhosting.net> <20100529135608.GZ9552@thelackthereof.org> <20100529160419.GD5181@tuppy.intrepidhosting.net> Message-ID: <20100529185044.GB9552@thelackthereof.org> On 2010.05.29.09.04, Darrin Chandler wrote: | I have no problem with people knowingly choosing GPL/LGPL. It's very important to understand how words are co-opted in propaganda type material -- and that lesson extends way beyond this topic! :) --Brock
