I can do a meeting this week at Bowne if that works for everybody. Scott, do you have something you want to present? I'd be interested in hearing about your experience writing your book. If not, I can talk about my CGI::Session replacement. Or both. Maybe we can do an alternating month thing - one month I'll have it at Bowne, the next wherever you guys want. Let me know. I should be reachable most of this week. I've been on vacation for two weeks. We'll be having a Phoenix.pm meeting Thursday, January 6th at 7:00PM. It will be held at Bowne, which is located at 1500 N. Central Avenue, which is on the Southwest corner of Central and McDowell. The parking lot is gated, so just press the button on the intercom, and tell the receptionist that you are there for the Perl meeting. Park in the lot that is straight ahead from the entrance on the South side of McDowell. Park in any uncovered, non-reserved space. Proceed to the main lobby, which is on the Northeast side of the parking lot. I will be presenting a replacement for CGI::Session and Scott will be talking about his epic battle against the Russian spam mafia. I believe that Scott will also have copies of his book available. Is it just bad luck that both groups have their first meetings of 2005 on the same night ? There aren't all that many technical groups in the Phoenix area, so I guess I'm surprised at the conflict. Any possibility of moving the Perl meeting to another night ? There is the PLUG development meeting, which should be the biggest concern since PM is also a development savvy meeting so it probably has the highest number of users having a conflict of interest for which one they would like to attend. This looks like its held the first thursday of every month. Then there is the east side meeting taking place the 2nd Thursday and the west side meeting is the last thursday in the month. Here is the link to the calendar. http://plug.phoenix.az.us/index.php?module=PostCalendar&func=view&tplview=&viewtype=month&Date=20050104&pc_username=&pc_category=&pc_topic=&print= Hopefully that works for everyone. That's probably related to the pm.org server move. It occurs to me another good place to send reviews is The Perl Review. use.perl.org is another good pick - write the review and submit it as an article. Unless I pull ahead of "Perl for Dummies" and stay there, I'm going to be too ashamed to show my face in public - *especially* places where there are Perl people (like Perl Mongers meetings). C'mon people, I don't ask for much. (Resent:) To people who got copies of Perl 6 Now (all five of you) and were encouraged to post reviews online if they found it favorable, here are some suggestions: http://books.perl.org/book/225 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1590593952/qid=1104379557/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-5821832-5535216?v=glance&s=books http://slashdot.org/submit.pl Of course, you're more than welcome to think up new and creative places to send reviews. Slashdot is of particular interest if you've written a longer, more thorough review with spoilers and loads of details. That's the kind of review they like and Slashdot is a great place to land a review. I hate the self-promotion thing, but right now I'm pulling up Matt Wright's rear and the shame is killing me. Thanks to everyone who came and listened to me talk. Next time, I'll talk about the creation of the book and the whole proposal and writing process. It was completely not what I expected and extremely interesting, IMO =) To those of you who are too self-important to make the trip or too cool to be seen in our company even when bribed with a free book: sit and spin. -scott ----- End forwarded message ----- From glim at mycybernet.net Mon Jan 24 17:16:00 2005 From: glim at mycybernet.net (glim@mycybernet.net) Date: Mon Jan 24 17:15:15 2005 Subject: [Phoenix-pm] Yet Another Perl Conference North America 2005 announces call-for-papers Message-ID: YAPC::NA 2005 (Yet Another Perl Conference, North America) has just released its call-for-papers; potential and aspiring speakers can submit a presentation proposal via: http://yapc.org/America/cfp-2005.shtml The dates of the conference are Monday - Wednesday 27-29 June 2005.
