Thanks for the fast reply. I looked at the v 5.8 perlre on perldoc.dom and did not see the hack you mentioned before I asked for help Looked again and found it in the v 5.6 perldoc. That looks a lot simpler... I think that I can tweek it to my task. Bob Lindley
