The holy grail of MySQL books is Paul DuBois' "MySQL"
http://www.bookpool.com/.x/owjrik1450/sm/0735709211
He also explains the DBI methods and usage specific to MySQL. It
doesn't cover the new MySQL stuff included in the new alpha
(transactions, replication, all that nifty stuff) ... but it's a great
resource for the basics (with about 200 pages of SQL stuff and 80 pages
of DBI)
