June 14th - Lucky Lab Brewpub 915 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Tomorrow is the regularly-scheduled June meeting date, but in celebration of having already executed one successful emergency rescheduled meeting replacement beer-drinking social hour this month, we'll be starting 22 minutes later and roughly 0.7 furlongs norther than the usual time and space. I will put out a pdx.pm sign. We might be out back depending on how crowded and noisy it is. You can also probably find us with or near the weekly hackathon folks. --Eric From enobacon at gmail.com Thu Jun 14 10:39:09 2012 From: enobacon at gmail.com (Eric Wilhelm) Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2012 10:39:09 -0700 Subject: [Pdx-pm] Fwd: Participate in Hacker Lounge or BOFs at Open Source Bridge? Message-ID: <201206141039.09607.enobacon@gmail.com> ---------- Forwarded Message From John Labovitz: ---------- I'm the coordinator for the Hacker Lounge at this year's Open Source Bridge conference (June 26-29, at the Eliot Center in downtown Portland). As in previous years, we're encouraging local user groups to participate in the conference. There are a couple of ways your group might want to be involved. First, we'll have a Community Night on Tuesday, June 26, from 6:30-9:30pm. We're looking to showcase specific open-source projects that are looking for more community involvement. We'll have several areas in the main space where people can sit down and learn about and hack on a project. We're encouraging participants to make the event as cooperative as possible -- that is, more of a hackfest/workshop than a presentation. People will probably rotate around the different areas over the evening. The Hacker Lounge is also open on Wednesday and Thursday evenings; those nights will likely be calmer and more low-key. (Thursday will be short: the conference will be closing at 8pm to allow participants to attend our off-site conference party.) We'll also have some classrooms available on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings for BOFs (birds-of-a-feather) sessions. If you'd like to hold a regular or special meeting of your group, you're welcome to do so as a BOF. The BoF sessions will be from 7-8:30pm and 8:30-10pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, and 6:30-8pm on Thursday. Although we certainly encourage all participants to register for the full conference, we'll be opening the conference to the public during the evenings, when the Hacker Lounge and BOFs are in full swing. We do require evening attendees to register for a free pass, which is available on our website at http://osb12.eventbrite.com/ . Please let me know if you'd like to participate in the Community Night. If you want to schedule a BOF, the easiest thing is to go here: http://opensourcebridge.org/events/2012bof/proposals Finally, anyone who wants to volunteer with the conference is welcome to apply. If you are able to commit at least 8 hours, you will receive a free pass to the entire conference. To sign up to volunteer, visit http://opensourcebridge.org/get-involved/ . -- John Labovitz Hacker Lounge Coordinator, Open Source Bridge 2012 From ben.hengst at gmail.com Thu Jun 14 20:19:12 2012 From: ben.hengst at gmail.com (benh) Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2012 20:19:12 -0700 Subject: [Pdx-pm] Fwd: UG News - OSCON 2012: Discounts, Free Passes, Nonprofit Pavilion, CLS + more In-Reply-To: <1334957504.23586.0.064503@post.oreilly.com> References: <1334957504.23586.0.064503@post.oreilly.com> Message-ID: Just a reminder about the user group code. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Marsee Henon & Jon Johns Date: Fri, Apr 20, 2012 at 2:31 PM Subject: UG News - OSCON 2012: Discounts, Free Passes, Nonprofit Pavilion, CLS + more To: ben.hengst+oreilly at gmail.com Hi there, We just opened registration and unveiled the program for this year's OSCON, the annual gathering of the best and brightest in open source. Get the wheels turning and start thinking about what you want you'd present. We'll open up the formal call for Ignite talks later this Spring. ================================== Submit a Proposal for the Open Edu Track ================================== We're looking for speakers to lead sessions in OSCON's Open Edu track. We want to hear about the key projects, APIs, open standards, and technological challenges in education technology as it accelerates the progress of U.S. public schools. Free/Libre Open Source Software Hacking (FLOSSHack[1]) events are designed to bring together individuals interested in learning more about application security with open source projects in need of low cost or pro bono security auditing. FLOSSHack provides a friendly, but mildly competitive, workshop environment in which participants learn about and search for vulnerabilities in selected software. The first FLOSSHack will be held on Sunday, July 1st from noon-4pm at Free Geek[2] and will focus on the Ushahidi platform[3]. Participation is open to the public. Participants are welcome to join in person or remotely and everyone is invited to begin searching for security vulnerabilities in the target software at any time. That's right, the bug hunt has already begun! More information can be found here: https://www.owasp.org/index.php/FLOSSHack_One Hope to see you there, tim PS- For future updates on this and other local OWASP events, please join our chapter mailing list (since I don't plan on annoying members of this list for every event): https://lists.owasp.org/mailman/listinfo/owasp-Portland 1. https://www.owasp.org/index.php/FLOSSHack_for_Participants 2. http://www.freegeek.org/ 3. http://ushahidi.com/ From jonathan at leto.net Sat Jun 30 00:15:27 2012 From: jonathan at leto.net (Jonathan "Duke" Leto) Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2012 00:15:27 -0700 Subject: [Pdx-pm] Talk topic for July 12th?
