Many thanks to all (Joshua Keroes, chromatic, Chris Weyl, Mark Morgan) 
for the input.  I'm building a new Linux-Vserver guest so I can try out 
perlbrew and local::lib.

Any suggestions of where to put stuff so it doesn't trample on (or get 
trampled on) the distribution?  /opt/, /usr/local ...
